Many people, myself included, carry a pocket knife for purely utilitarian purposes. I have had one in my pocket since I was eight years old. Cub Scouts carried pocket knives, and I was one for awhile, so hence the pocket knife.
As a defensive weapon, it is far cheaper than a firearm. It is not hard to imagine that poor, inner city minorities would have a knife for defense. Especially when they frequented bars, as performers.

True, I can always slit my own throat when the guy with the gun approaches _and_ I only have a knife.

FWIW, I usually carry one of my Gerber Coverts, or a Boker AK47XL too. I've got a Benchmade Infidel, and it rides inside my vest when I'm out, but its not an everyday cutting tool, just a dagger.

Auto knives are legal in Florida since 2003 or 2004 I believe, which is good for me, because most of my "cuttin" chores are when I'm working on a radio tower. One hand operation is mo'betterer.

More expensive, yes. Harder to get? Maybe just a little bit, but not really hard. Carryin' a blade, shiv, shank, or "knife" was just the social norm back in the day, regardless of race, but more a socio-economic thing. Start with the black bluesmen carrying knives, and it morphs into blacks carrying knives, then Latinos carrying knives... A slippery slope of discussion we should avoid.

Half the stories you read about with those old timers are not true, and the other half are a bunch of lies. Its all part of the mystique, the stuff legends are (trying to be) made of.

I don't carry a knife but I had one used on me. The nut job who held it put an end to my music career.

Spyderco Delica plus Glock or Kel-Tec. I play mostly classic rock though.

The only knife I own is a Kabar. Not exactly incognito. I don’t carry it. Wish I could.

I kinda preempted your request/demand with a thread called "Never Bring A Knife To A Gunfight!". For the record, I'm not overweight. I'm 5'11" at 197-205lbs. I'm in very good condition thanks to regular weight lifting and my Assault Airbike (and climbing power line poles)and my resting heart rate this morning was 50bpm. I have a rather large solar sex panel plus significant thinning on the top of my head but I keep well groomed with visits to my barber every eight weeks or as needed. I live in a small town with right at 12,000 people. Since my neighbors are closer than 50 feet on each side, I guess you could say I am a suburban white man. I have never owned a pair of cargo shorts but I keep my knife in my right front pocket. What else are you wrong about?

I thought that this thread was about knives as they related to the blues, and not “hey, yeah, I carry”, or, “I own brand X.”

I can’t say for certain, but I think Little Walter Jacobs had to carry something besides his wallet.

    You should!
In some kinda sheath that goes right across your chest!
I know what you mean, but I was having a pain med induced laugh about it being the only knife you own.
I'm imaging a guy spreading paté on a cracker with a KBar...or cutting up your kid's chicken nuggets...

I read Mike Bloomfield was scared of Paul Butterfield, because he was known for carrying a gun when they were in Chicago.

I always have one for work, and now when off I carry one, because I feel some things missing without it. Once in a while its a problem if I forget and a metal detector pops up.
