The Black Strat by Phil Taylor has been listed on Amazon UK and USA for several hundred pounds/dollars for a few years now. When one came up for £25 (even that is more than I would usually pay for a book) a couple of years ago I grabbed one. Nice book, new, signed by the author but now used ones are listed as £1,216! Why the high asking prices? Does anyone pay them? Would anyone like to make me an offer?

They are out of print and two stores apparently hope that a rapid fan will lay down 1.216£ for it

    £1200? That's almost 10 quid a page!

I read one time that some booksellers have automatic pricing programs that search for like items, then adjust prices on items to match the "market value". When two of these products collide, the price keeps rising as each seller adjusts to the other. I don't know if this is what's happening with the titles you mention, but I'd wonder. . . .

That seems the most likely explanation I've heard. The prices have been around the same level, a few hundred pounds, from all sellers in UK and USA for a few years. I was intrigued why it was so expensive, so I have a look every now and then. Ocasionally they are a reasonable price like when I got one, sometimes they are off the scale but then they even out again. Some kind of algorithm setting the price, that's gone out of kilter does seem feasible. I would be surprised if hadn't been fixed though, it must be killing sales, unless it unintentionally gived the book added mystique.
