Will have to check it out later! Recently watched the new, three hour death metal documentary, lots of interviews with members of both established bands and newer bands (Frozen Soul, Undeath, Sanguisugabogg) that are just cutting their teeth. There's also the Doom Doc, and the legendary Such Hawks Such Hounds that talks about the stoner metal scene.

Will check this out tomorrow. I've read Lords of Chaos a few times and watched Before the Light Takes Us again recently. I've been incorporating some black metal techniques into my music lately, so I've been listening to a ton of black metal.

Ah , i am not even big on BM but i have also read that book a few times. Until the light takes us is also cool.

edit this book is a big one. It is a collection of the slayer fanzine from norway.
The tone is a bit juvenile, but what would you expect from a bunch of 18 years old metal heads ? Loads of interviews and reviews... Some of those bands are long forgotten.

No fan of the music, but the history is an interesting read. Mayhem is pretty center of it all and that band has seen some stuff.
If you are not into metal, black metal is sort of underground. Some bands made the headlines in the early 1990's for a lot of wrong reasons. I like the music, but i could do without the vocals.

I had a copy of The Lords of Chaos then I discovered the author had some dubious political views, so I got rid of it before I'd read it.
it is a good read. I didn't know about the political views of the author.
edit there are a lot of dubious political views in BM too...

To sum it up in a few words, mayhem' singer had a mental illness, the guitar player pushed him on the edge because they didn't agree on some stuffs. The singer shot himself, the guitar player saw the body, went to buy a camera, re arranged the suicide scene, and took pictures in order to make it a record cover. Apparently, he also picked up a few pieces of the skull which he sent to some friends.
The bassist didn't agree on that cover idea, and asked him to burn the pics. He didn't, and sent some of the pictures left and right, one of which ended up on a bootleg. Bassist left the band.
The guitar guy was stabbed a few months later by the new bass player on some sort of you owe money for royalties.
By that time, they had already recorded a lp which became their magnum opus.
The family of the guitar guy didn't agree to let the record out, and asked for the bass parts of their son's murderer to be removed. Drummer said ok, will do. He then just lowered them in the mix and kept the takes.
And that is one story among many others.

Black metal began with Newcastle band, Venom. Their second album, Black Metal, came out in 1982.
Their drummer, Anthony 'Abaddon' Bray, lived in my street. My mate 'Drunken' Duncan was their roadie.
After a while Duncan grew tired of all their 'satanic' songs and went to work in the Brunswick Methodist Church in Newcastle!!!
