That's closer than you think. When the 'color' is outside the visible spectrum, they move the picture's spectrum around so that we can see it.

The highest temperatures in the universe exist at an accretion disc.
As well as the most extremes of everything else. The highest speeds of matter. The brightest light. Highest X-rays, Gamma radiation on and on, all caused by the weakest force in the universe. Just amazing there is finally an image of one.

Most news outlets are only showing the blurry zoomed in picture of the black hole so I'm posting the entire zoomed-out image of the black hole and everything it is consuming. The tiny black spec in this image is 6.5 billion times the size of our sun. This thing is HUGE.

Cool shot! The funny thing is, as far as we can tell at this time, the actual black hole has no size at all. It is a singularity that is just a point. No length, no diameter, no nothing. The black hole pictured has 6.5 Billion time the mass of our Sun (so, 6.5 B times the matter content), but it's actually a lot smaller (again as far we know right now). However, the event horizon, which is what we can see in your awesome shot there, is plenty huge. Functionally, I guess you could say that the event horizon is the border of the black hole anyway.

Good question. What you see is called “pseudocolor”. The color is based on a look up table where intensity or amplitude information is mapped to colors. The scale you see is common in scientific publications originating in Europe. Zero intensity is mapped to black. Increasing intensity is mapped using a progression through brown, maroon, red, orange, and yellow with the maximum amplitude on the scale represented by white. This scale is intuitive for most people not affected by red-green color blindness. Pseudocolor is used to render data for maximum visual impact. Understand that the rendering is not the data. It is just a way to present it to a wide audience.
