Now Michael Jackson was pretty affected in delivery, with his super-clipped syllable thing. But this performance makes MJ’s version sound like an example of perfect elocution.

Yeah....I find I have zero tolerance for that overly affected sort of singing in an attempt to sound unique...unique like all the others who sing with that affectation. Just sing in your own voice please.

My exact problem with Susan Tedeschi. She speaks like a normal person but her singing style is just forced and silly.

Can't do the vocal fry and chewed vowels. I'll assume a lot of melisma comes later, don't care for that either.

The original is about as perfect as a pop song gets, even with the weird tics and the chair who is not MJ's son.

This is what Hell must be like. I’m eternally trapped in some weird post-modern design mansion. Frantically running down the halls searching for a way out. Every time I open a door, it’s a different colored room and there she is, singing that song in that voice, sitting the exact same way, with that blank expression on her face. No, no, no, no, get me outta here!!!!

The video made it even worse for me.

I liked the overdone "vocal fry and chewed vowels" vocals when Macy Gray first did them. But too many do it. And here it seems unauthentic. Like if a comedian is replicating another comedian, but in a serious manner... like it's "his".
She does a good job though.

Is this a pale imitation of what might have been if a stoned Amy Winehouse had done this song?

That's interesting because I don't get the same feeling about her singing....I think she's a great singer and I enjoy it. So maybe it's just a case of affectations that I'm okay with vs others that I'm not.... ???
