I'm currently deciding on a new set of pickups for my G&L ASAT Deluxe Carved Top and currently have a DiMarzio Super 3 in the bridge with a Wilde Bill Lawrence L500L in the neck. It's definitely a different combo for sure, and both possess qualities I like.

However, I don't know if I should keep the Super 3 and go with another DiMarzio (PAF Pro or D Activator X neck), or move the L500L to the bridge and put an L500C in the neck. I play mostly heavy metal and hard rock, but like pickups that can cleanup good with the volume knob. Any insight is appreciated.

I don't play Heavy Metal, really, but I do play Rock with distorted guitar and I like the combination of the L500R in the neck and L500L in the bridge. I have a couple guitars with that pairing.

The L500C is a "cleaner" pickup that Bill himself suggested I put in an S-S-H guitar when he was still alive and answering the phone at the shop. He told me that the "C" stood for "clean" and that it's what I should use as a bridge pickup for pairing with single coils.

Of the DiMarzios, I like the DP156 "Humbucker From Hell" in the neck (which cleans up very well) and the DP223 "PAF 36th Anniversary Bridge" in the bridge.

Best of luck with your "Tone Quest"

I've got 5 other guitars with Wildes and I've had a love/hate relationship with DiMarzio, but the Super 3 sounds absolutely killer in this guitar. I brought it to the jam and it slayed thru my Randall RG80, but I love Wildes as well and may put an L500C and L500L together in another.

Hmmmm - Dimarzio's that clean up, yet do metal...(not Lawrence guy, sorry...)

I know this is cliche, but a Super Distortion will do that nicely. However...in the BL500 zone, try maybe...

PAF Pro neck with a D-Activiataor bridge. I bet the Dominion (Mark Morton sig) would work well for that too.

Like @eallen said.
and with the multiwire of the L500 (also L90) you can set each pickup in series ore parallel with itself.
you get a lot of tone options then and parallel with itself they sound good to.
