I really like my EHX East River Drive. It is a TS-based variant, but seems to fill the niche between fat & fizz.

the hot mode on a ts9dx. led clipping and a bigger cap for the low end roll off.

it was still a little much on the bass for me with a 1uF, so I swapped it with a 100n.

and now I only use that mode. (but i also get more dirt from the amp than the pedal).

I’m glad you mentioned the difference in clipping. After much searching, I finally found that it was one thing that made a huge difference to me.

Asymmetrical vs symmetrical clipping was the key for me. I find that I much prefer asymmetrical clipping.

Technically, I was with the EHX Crayon, which is mostly a Timmy ;)

Well, it was mentioned; but not specifically recommended. You may get the trophy, after all.

Caline Pure Sky. It's a Tim the Enchanter (Timmy) clone, and it sounds pretty good. It's cheap and cheaply made, so no mosh bar gigs!

The gain knob goes from zero--like there's no pedal in the chain--to mild grind.

JHS Bonsai. Mr. Clean said, "Low gain midrange has never been so intuitive."

Obvious, Q to me here Greatful-ape is what Gain level are you after... Max, hair, medium ...?
Personally, providing you're not expecting no noise ( ie you say the BD is fizzy) on a Max gain setting with a KT66 ... Sweet Honey from Mad Professor.

Blues Driver always sounds good, then my ears get sick of it. It starts to sound like a caricature of what I think a Fender amp sounds like. But I usually am doing that into a Pathfinder, haven't tried with many other amps.

Try a Boss OD1X. It’s sonically between the SD1 and OD3 but it uses MDP to create a dynamic response and clarity with some of the best note separation I’ve heard on an OD pedal. More importantly, the EQ has independent bass and treble controls so you can dial in exactly what you need. For my rig, I cut as much bass as possible to tighten things up. Some guys like the fat loose sound.

Need to cut through a dense onstage mix. Sustain and punch without the excessive treble of a BD.

When I hear fat I hear it's a tone issue, when I hear fizzy I hear it's a gain issue. Its hard to say something is in between two parameters that aren't on the same slider, as it were.

Have you tried the Waza Blues Driver? It is supposedly less fizzy, right?

I’m lost. Punching through a dense mix is what a Tube Screamer does best.

What do you intend “between” a TS and BD to mean?

If you mean “more mids than a TS,” there is a Way Huge pedal that offers even more mid hump than a TS. The Overrated Special I think.

Again ... more on that really ie horns/keys/lapsteel??? .... but MilwMark hit the nail on the head plus, I'd say, if you need to cut through a mix surely you need treble as from the BD-2?

I have one of these .... Tech21 Boost-Overdrive ... it can cover a lot of bases the 'Sparkle' control is not dissimilar to a 'Presence' control and you can get a clean boost on top of the overdrive or independently.
I use mine for heavy 'crunch' (TS style settings) and/or a clean boost alongside a BD-2 for edge of breakup.
Think you'd have to buy used now or look to something like a Fulltone FullDrive - never owned one so no idea how comparable they are.
For a budget option - you could alternatively have a look at the Caline Cacti, but again, never tried it.
