With my amp (Blues Cube with kt66 module) I find a ts is too fat, and the BD too fizzy at the level of gain I want. What sits between these two? (If Mooer make it, all the better.)

    Thanks!

The Boss OD-3 or EHX Crayon might work for you. I’ve had both and still use the crayon (actually I have the EHX Hot Wax dual Overdrive, which has the crayon circuit on one side).

They will both have a bit of a suppressed high end, so not as fizzy as the Blues Driver, but not as suppressed as the Tubescreamer. They also have some mid range emphasis like a tubescreamer, but not as pronounced - more balanced sounding. Finally, they retain more bottom end than a tubscreamer, although if I recall the OD-3 correctly, it had more lows than the crayon does.

The OD-3 is pretty unique, but the Crayon is roughly based on a Timmy overdrive. Many budget pedal makers have a Timmy clone in their line up, so I would not be surprised if you can find a Mooer version of it.

Try an SD1. People compare them to TS pedals, and I love both the TS and the SD1 pretty much equally, but they don’t sound alike to me.

I've had both the Tube Screamer and the Blues Driver. My favorite OD pedal these days is a Bearfoot Blueberry. I will also say that I'm also pretty happy with the TC electronics Mojo Mojo pedal.

A cheap 'go between' ( per OP's request) OD that I'm really liking is the Caline Orange Burst ( Xotic BB Preamp clone)

It has Bass and Treble controls, and a nice tapered Gain knob that world really well with my SG humbuckers ( PAF output range) and my Stratocaster.

    It's friendly!

Jakedog is right, Boss SD-1 or pedals based on SD-1 are between a BD-2 and TS.
OD-3 is also probably somewhere in between. Maybe even a Rat on lower gain could work.

Here are this pedals characteristics. The difference between TS and BD-2 is (a)symmetrical clipping and (non) mid boosting. SD-1 seats somwhere in between:
    BD-2
Asymmetrically clipped, Non mid boosted, Soft clipped, low headroom

    TS
Symmetrically clipped, Mid boosted, Soft clipped, low headroom

    SD-1
Asymmetrically clipped, Mid boosted, Soft clipped, low headroom

Some other type of pedals characteristics:
    Klon Centaur
Symmetrically clipped, Mid boosted, Hard clipped, high headroom

    Pro-Co Rat
Symmetrically clipped, Mid boosted, Hard clipped, low headroom

For detailed info I strogly suggest this TPS episode:

My new secret sauce is my TRex Fat Shuga boost/reverb, an always-on for me, but with the "cream" control at noon, and using that to hit a TC Electronics Tube Pilot with the tube gain set at about 8:30 and the out level at about 1:00. Imparts a Valco-esque level of grit short of full-on wild distortion. Gets a little treble-y, so I've taken to adjusting to taste with the guitar's tone control.

I play a Blues Cube Hot, the Marshall voiced version Guitar Center was selling for a while. I play it clean as a pedal platform and the two overdrives on my board are both Mojo Mojos. One set for minimal gain, one set for medium gain, and when I kick 'em both on its a good bit of gain, still short of distortion. They're cheap and they have loads of, well, mojo.... I've tried Tubescreamers, a Mooer BD-2 knockoff, a Soul Food, and one of the Fulltone boost/OD combination pedals.

Which do you like better overall? Also how are you using it? I’d guess with a decent bit of gain but it’s worth asking. If you like the sound of the BD-2 then something in the Bluesbreaker family might work. I find both are fairly faithful to the original signal but the Bluesbreaker rolls off some of the really high end, whereas the BD-2 it seems you can’t get rid of some of the fizz without an EQ pedal.

As mentioned above something in the BB preamp vein might work. The Caline is pretty faithful and cheap. If you prefer something from a more established brand but not as expensive as the Xotic, the aforementioned EHX Crayon is basically a modified BB rather than a Timmy.

If you like the base tone of the Tubescreamer then it’s a bit harder because the mid hump is pretty characteristic of the TS sound. Maybe something like a Full-Drive 2 in the flat mids mode?
