Good morning! I recently purchased a Peavey Classic 20 MH and built a pine cabinet (1x12) to pair with it but I cannot decide what speaker i want to put in it. I am currently running it into a stock fender frontman (1x10) I converted into a cab and it sounds great but I feel like I could do the amp more justice with the right speaker. My play styles are blues, and classic rock. I had my eye on Eminence Swamp Thang, cannabis Rex and Texas heat. Just wanted to see if anyone else has the peavey classic 20 and what speaker/cab they put with it!

I don't have the Classic 20 head but I have a Classic 30 head and I tried a Texas Heat with it for a while and I thought it was ok but later I tried a Celestion Vintage 30 and I liked it better. I play country, classic rock and some blues.

The matching tweed 112 speaker cab from PV comes with a Vintage 30 also.

Is it a closed back or half open back cab?
Seems you like Emi products. You want early
    breakup, later breakup...lots of headroom..growl.
etc etc. Billions of types (ceramic or alnico)
Fender chimey or british growly..oh ya
    budget considerations...Emi has new signature
lines out so a bunch. Of course (Celestion/WGS/Weber/Tonetubby/scumback)
I would even check out avatar speakers . They have their own
line along with good deals on Fane and Celestion.
    Wish you luck.

Don’t have a C20 head, but have heard them. I like greenbacks. Some would rather have a tighter, less growly sound.

I have a Classic 20 1x10 combo that I got 2nd hand. It came with a 10" Celestion Gold in it and I've had no desire to swap it out. Sounds terrific.

I have that same head. I use a simple common Jensen C12Q with mine and think it sounds great. Very crisp. I also have a Celestion A type that sounds good too, a bit fuller. The CRex was too bottomy for the Peavy, IMO, though I'm sure you could EQ it to work if you had to.

another vote for the V30. Tried it a few years ago with a peavey classic 30 and it made a huge difference

I would love to have a Classic 20 head. I had a 90's C20 combo that was monstrous when plugged into my Jet City 1x12 cab (Eminence), but was just boxy and underwhelming on its own. I agree on the idea of the Jensen C12, but a greenback would be a good try as well.

It is an open back right now, but I can easily put a back on it to tighten things up if needed. I am not stuck on Emi, and willing to give others a try. I like having a lot of headroom, but strive for dialing things to get the “edge of breakup” sound for aggressive picking/dynamics. Any speakers come to mind for tight low end and chimey fender highs (maybe something that helps scoop the mids)?

that’s good to know! I like having bottom end but want it to be tight. I was considering the CRex for a while, but I may look at some other options or brands now. Thanks for your help!

Take a look at the Webers. The C20 may be more voiced for British speakers. The Classic 50 comes with Celestion speakers and lots of guys talk about swapping out for the Silver Bell or Blue Dog speakers. You might also take a look at what people are using in their Classic 30s, I think you will find Weber has its share of enthusiastic supporters.

I had a classic 20 combo. Here is a secret. It really loves NOS pre amp tubes as well as power tubes, BUT, as I remember the better value is mod production for the power tubes. I can't see how the Gold Celestion wouldn't be the best choice. Either 10 or 12 "

did you use 12AX7 NOS tubes? I love the way mine sounds now but was thinking about throwing a 12AT7 in the mix to help clean up the gain stage a bit. On the C20 MH I notice a bit of fizziness in the gain channel (that I am not a fan of) around 12 o clock with the speaker I am using now. Was thinking changing speakers could clean that up as well.

    Downvote for the v30.

It sounds better than the blue Marvel which was a shame, a g12h30 is way better.

I have a Jensen Neo cab and I liked it.

Yes NOS 12ax7. I had telefunken power tubes that made a huge difference but costly. It is a gainy amp I'd try a 5751. Mine was a 90's amp and it would get VERY hot.

If you're looking for more of a US flavor the eminence Red White and Blues is definitely worth a look. That's what David Allen uses in his 1x12 combos. I liked it way more than the cannabis Rex, which was dark and muffled.

Not a fan of v30s. I know they are a go to for classic rock and metal, but they’ve always sounded harsh with any amp I tried them in. For classic rock, my absolute favorite is an Eminence Private Jack. It has some greenback-ish qualities. Another speaker I’ve been really liking for rock tones lately is the newer Celestion V-Type speaker. It has a bit more midrange than the Greenback and is a bit more modern sounding, but not as harsh as the v30, imho. I also like Celestion Golds.
