I'm a horn guy, been playing off and on for 50 yrs, still suck. I do, however, know what makes a good horn player. As I think about this aspect, I'm after the folks who aren't featured artists, but are part of a bigger band that wants a killer horn player. Clarence Clemmons, of course. Also, Jeff Coffin of DMB and Bela Fleck is just an amazing player. I offer up as evidence:

Horn guy here too! I bought a Yamaha tenor student model about 20 years ago, and took lessons for almost 2 years.

I really enjoyed the experience, but in the end, I didn’t keep up with it, and I lost my chops. I still have the horn, and this thread has been an inspiration for getting it out again.

Also, I still have my student model clarinet that I break out from time to time, which is really fun to play.

Keep on honkin’!!

Don Menza’s solo from “Channel One Suite” with the Buddy Rich Band.

Starts around 2:40… listen to the entire solo….it’s truly a showcase of a master of his instrument…for that matter listen to the entire 12+ minutes song…it’s Buddy Rich at the height of his powers…which in itself is simply amazing…the whole band just kills on this tune.

I don’t want to give you the whole “This is when men were men” speech….but these are all players of extraordinary talent…being driven by an admittedly rough taskmaster….Buddy wanted everyone to care as much as he did…on this recording he accomplished that.

Recorded live in Las Vegas on July 7, 1968 at 3 a.m. in the morning.

Game over.
