All my amps are tweed and have no built-in reverb, so I need pedals for that.
I've been through a few in my search (trying to achieve the classic Fender reverb sound). To my ears, the Strymon Flint is the closest I've found to nailing an actual Fender reverb, with the added bonus of three iconic tremolos: round wave (Vibroverb), square wave (any black face Fender combo), and a Magnatone-like tremolo/vibrato pattern.

The best reverb unit I've played through was a friends early 60's Fender tube reverb. Absolutely glorious sound, but pedals are much more practical.

I mostly play through Fender amps and the onboard reverbs are fine. For those amps that I may play that either don't have them or have crappy ones, I use a Wampler faux Spring Reverb. There may be better ones out there but this one works well for me...

I use a way huge Aqua puss mkii for slapback (the best I've heard apart from actual tape) ,a Fredric effects West Germany for trem (70s schaller trem clone) and the Spring in the amp for verb.
It depends what sort of verb your wanting. There seem to be a lot of big ambient verb pedals out there (Keeley aurora, neunaber wet, strymon etc) but that's not really my thing.
I had the neunaber several years ago and while I can't fault the sound quality,it sort of just hung around in the background droning away or at shorter settings sounded very very digital (more like a lot of short repeats) and it needed a tone control for variation. Also the dry signal sounded very separate from the wet signal, therefore the dry guitar still sounded very in your face.I prefer the dry/wet to mesh more so the guitar sounds further away.
Also avoid the boss rv-5....I had one and all it was good for was the modulated verb (which to be fair is beautifully done) and room settings...and bloody hell was it bright! You couldn't put the tone knob above 9 o clock without it ripping your ears off! As for the hiss...awful.
The Spring setting on the rv-5 is also laughably bad.
I'm led to believe the catalinbread topanga is the business for surfy springisms although the boss 63 reverb pedal is apparently good too.
The demos of it sound good to me anyway.

Get the flint and the cheapest analog delay you can find and/or a dd3, you'll be set and even at the strymons price tag its at least 2 pedals and scores others with all the features

This is true. The Flint is very nice.
Also the older MIJ made long chip dd-3 (plus dd-2,dsd-2 and 3) sound nicer than the new dd-3s.
The repeats aren't as clear and to my ears fall somewhere between analog and digital.
The dsd's in particular can be had very cheaply.(I own 2)

For a '50s sound, you might consider:

Analog delay set for slapback, such as Analogman (what I use), Aquapus (these sound good for slapback), Boss DM-2w
Room reverb, such as TC Electronic Hall of Fame (what I use)

Spring reverb is more of a '60s sound. A lot of '50s recordings with slapback tape delay also used a reverb chamber or just the sound of the room for reverb.

I got my eye on the Behringer analog Vintage Delay. I think it's the VD200.

It's less than half the price of anything out there, and gets great reviews.

Check out some YouTube reviews!

For slapback my new favorite pedal is the Earthquaker Devices Disaster Transport Jr. I have tried a ton of different stuff and it just does it for me. Love from first sound.

For Reverb, I use the Boss FRV-1 pedal. It is a decent spring reverb pedal for cheap. But I usually use my stand alone Fender Reverb tank.

Best Trem I've found is the Demeter Tremulator. Downside (or not, depending on how you want to use it) is a boost over unity. James Demeter will install a trim pot if requested.

I'm digging this new VFE Ravine a lot, I'm running it in the parallel mode so verb and delay don't feed into one another. Way verb is voiced its got a little bit of boing all its own then pull in some slapback delay beside it, very cool and different take over the standard of feeding a delay into a reverb sound. But it gives great slapback even without verb turned on. You basically have a mix knob for both sounds. Also has a buffered trails and momentary footswitch mode where you can actually play the slapbacks/verbs with your foot, very cool. This is slapback, rockabilly and spaghetti western heaven.

Darn that's a hard one...

Best for slap back?? I personally use along with my amp's reverb a Keely Magnetic Echo... works beautiful.

I use a Holy Grail Nano for reverb. Simple, inexpensive, one knob, no need to spend a small fortune or reinvent the wheel as far as reverb pedals go.

I was using a Boss DD3 forever for slapback, but man I have to say i love this Ibanez ES2 pedal. The slider may be a bit fragile if you're rough with your gear, but unlike other analog delay pedals I've tried in the past, like the MXR Carbon Copy, which was super dark and got buried and did not sound very good when I used it for slapback, the Ibanez ES2 sounds amazing, and it's incredibly versatile. I don't just use it for delay, and can get it to do a convincing reverb and other crazy, spacey time-based effects and sounds. It's worth checking out and I love mine. It's a very underrated pedal.

If you just want a straight-forward, bare-bones delay that isn't full of bells and whistles and can be had cheap used if you look around on GuitarCenter's site for used pedals, the DD3 is a no brainer. Scotty Moore used it, so it's a good enough choice for me, but these days the Ibanez ES2 is where it's at.

There are lots of options for slap-back, nearly any delay will do the job. If I remember right, Brian Setzer uses a Boss DD-3 in his stage rig.

Well, if thats true then...slapback search over.
I use my DD5 for slapback, analog delays just dissapear for slapback.

Setzer uses an Echoplex. He might have used something different if his Echoplex and the backup Echoplex both failed, but the DD-3 is not exactly his go-to pedal.
