Don't forget you can stack things like a TS+DS-1 or boutique versions of those.

    Hi,
Good luck in pursuit of the drive, alot of good recommendations here. I did find the OCD most versatile for my application (amp set just on break up), however you will need to find what works best with your amp, settings your using, guitar pickups, and style of playing (I dig harder to get more drive).

I have 3 drives on my board that I have split now for Tele, Les Paul & Strat. I couldn't find one that would sit nicely with all 3 with how I set the amp up and my style playing.

    Best of luck.

    Sticking to my favorites....

DOD250 is a fine choice, as is the next gen VoodooLab Overdrive, which might be even better than the 250.
Every time I plug in my OCD which is based on the 250 and VLOD, I'm amazed that the OCD isn't as good as the pedals it's based on. Does a great clean boost though.
Falls short of a being favorite.
I don't like Rats or tube screamers either.

One that continues to impress me and can do a good range of sounds is the Suhr Shiba Drive.
It gets more into the smooth Marshall distortion rather than the grindy, like some of the Aerosmith lead tones you mention.

Last I'd add the little known Metal Pedals Bomb Shell.
I find this one outstanding in a very big collection of dirt pedals.
They don't call it an OD and do say it does high gain, but it's not like most dist pedals that sort of put your sound in a little box
Worth looking at if you can find one.

I'll throw in an honorable mention to the Visual sound Rt66 OD side (paired with a fine comp), which is also in the Jeckyll & Hyde paired with a Marshall Shred Master.
The OD side is a TS variant but the only TS I've liked, and I actually bought three or four of the Rt66 plus a J&H because I liked them that much, and they "changed" in later production.

I'll throw in the Oddfellow Caveman as one that i bought and while I don't use it, I do think it's worth checking out.

It is in the family that started with the DOD250 and the MXR dist +, followed by the VLOD, followed by the OCD.
The caveman came after the OCD and is more open and less compressed than the VLOD or OCD, going back to the very open natural feel and sound of the OD250.
The lack of any compression is probably why i don't use it, but if less compression is what you want, this is a king.
It also has a second boost FS, sorta like a Fulltone Fulldrive, but really not the same, just a more gain switch.

+1 for the Proco RAT. First pedal that came to my mind when I read your title.

I’ve got the Hudson Broadcast, and although it is an option, the more saturated sounds lean towards the fuzz, rather than 70s distortion.

i feel like a distortion plus might fit the ticket, but i can't remember what aerosmith's tone sounds like.

Another OCD vote here. Since getting one a few years ago, I've been pleasantly surprised at how much ground this pedal covers.

Agreed that it's a great pedal, but it does tend to sound fairly "modern" IMO

Like a lot of other people have said - ProCo Rat is what I think of when I see "overdrive/distortion", there's lots of flexibility in the EQ too. The Mooer Black Secret has the LM308 chip that was in the 1980s Rats so that would be a fairly cost effective place to start.

As most people are saying though - OCD. I see that pedal on A LOT of boards belonging to pro bands who cover some quite heavy distorted territory (Pixies, The Cribs). Just to balance my 2 paragraphs up - the Hustle Drive is Mooer's OCD clone.

    Hope that's some use!

MXR Distortion + is the pedal that came to mind for me. Can cover a lot of ground with it, from clean boost to mild OD to well into 70s style distortion territory. Sounds good. Easy to use. Plays well with most every kind of amp. IMO it doesn't get enough love. The OCD is a fine pedal but it's a Dist+ rip and to my ears isn't much of an improvement (although I like the high power/low power switch).

Thanks all for the suggestions. I ended up finding a great deal on a Full-Drive 2 v2, which has a great single-channel TS sound but gets closer to distortion when you kick on the second channel, and it's on the way now. Am also considering something Rat-esque to use for higher-gain applications - I've long had my eye on the Catalinbread Katzenkonig, which is a mash-up of the Rat circuit with a Tone Bender MkII, so that may be my next purchase.

I'll return and report on the FD2v2 shortly...

Chuck Norris and a Rat walk into a bar - nothing is left, except Chuck Norris and the Rat.

You can play a Rat, but you can't play Chuck Norris

So the Rat is your answer.
