SD '59s

Howdy,

I've had a pair of SD '59s in my 1980 Gibson ES-335 for years and they're great. Good luck!

Similarly, I've mostly used buckers in tele neck positions, but to my ears even in that application, Duncan's Antiquity sounded better than the 59/Jazz/Seth that I tried in the same guitar.

Had a Duncan 59 neck in a Fernandes 335 once, I didn't think it translated the 'hollowness' all that well - sounded more like LP.

I'm thinking of getting a 335 variant again soon, and the buckers i'm considering are the Antiquities as well as Lollar Imperial Low Winds.

On a different note, I had Harmonic Design Z90s in that Fernandes, and it sounded fabulous!

For pickups, Lollar Imperials, WCR Crossroads or the RS Guitarworks Fralin True 60's pickups, High Order, or any other handmade PAF type pickup, I think SD Antiquities might do as well though I haven't personally heard those in a 335. I personally do not like the Gibson 57 Classics, they're dull and one-dimensional in comparison to these handmade ones. Use 500K CTS pots, 50's wiring and Jensen Paper In Oil (or old Black Beauty or Bumblebee) caps, .10uf or .15uf in the neck tone control and .022uf in the bridge tone control. And use Pyramid or Snake Oil pure nickel strings. That will give you what you want.

I have Duncan Antiquities

I have Duncan Antiquities in my 88 335 and I highly recommend them. Interestingly, I got the guitar for a good deal because the original pickups did not do the guitar justice. They were only on 88 gibsons, I think they were designed by Bill Lawrence, and they have a small circuit board on the bottom. In any event, I replaced them with some used antiquities I got off of ebay and I love it now. I also changed out the pots and used the "50's" wiring.

I also have Burstbucker 1 and 2 in my LP and I think those would be good too. You can get them pretty cheap on ebay. You should be aware that the Burstbucker Pro is a different pickup and sometimes the two are confused.

I have a set of High Order pickups in my Sheraton II that I really like. Jeff Gay, the owner of High Order, wound a set to my specifications; I asked for a set as close as possible to original PAFs and that's just what I got.

His prices are very reasonable and you have a lot of options for wind and magnet type. Hist web site is http://www.highorderpickups.com.

I'd also like to try a set of True Tones sometime. A forum member here, "benbo", winds these and they look very good and are very reasonably priced. Benbo's web site is (link removed).

I'm hoping that BB chimes in here with his opinions as he has tried a LOT of pickups and always has interesting input.

Custom Wounds...

Why dont you consider having a set wound for what you're looking for? I've used this guy...Jon Moore...http://www.tonefordays.com/

I've got guitars with Classic 57's and love em. However, I'm most happy with a set of custom wounds I bought from Jon. He worked with me to help me get what I wanted in tone, then sent me a beautiful set of HB's that just make me smile everytime I play the 335 Hamer Echotone I put them in. He offered a lot of ideas and input on what he suggested to get this tone or that tone, etc. It was a great experience for me. And I couldn't be happier. I know there's others on this forum who have used him as well. His prices are very reasonable and he's a great guy that takes a lot of pride in his work. I also got a set of P-90's from him for my Casino...another great purchase.

There's other pickup winders even here on this forum that are probably great as well. Jon just happens to be the only one I have experience with.

Question About Benedetto A6s

... I personally do not like the Gibson 57 Classics, they're dull and one-dimensional in comparison to these handmade ones....

Interesting.

I've just bought a 2002 Memphis Custom Shop ES345. It has a beautiful finish and action but the tone is sort of indifferent/non-responsive - both with flats and rounds. I suspect it is the 57 Classic pups but I have also been advised that it might be a nut or a saddle issue - or even having a stop tailpiece instead of a trapeze.

I'm going to take the guitar to a local tech for a tone audit.

I was thinking that if it is the pickups, Benedetto A6s may be the way to go as I play jazz/blues.

Has anybody tried these and would care to comment?
