I knew something didn’t sound right about that title! I saw Elvin Bishop only once, when his group was the opening act at Fillmore East in March 1971, and was followed by the Allman Bros recording their live album, and then the headliner “Johnny Winter And” with Rick Derringer as second guitarist. I think any one of them could have vied for guitar solo of the century.
Sorry.

So many great ones. Just throwing out: I happened onto My Sharona the other day and discovered it has a great solo! Crossroads by Cream has been a favorite for a long time. The Eagles had some tasty ones. Eric Clapton's Come Back Baby is cool.

My choice is James Honneyman Scott´s solo in KID by The Pretenders.

One of the first I thought about, along with “Don’t Dream it’s Over,” by Crowded House and “Everbody Wants to Rule the World.” I think of this question as looking for an iconic verse/chorus long solo instead of a long jam. By the way, I played Fooled Around and Fell literally hundreds of times in a lounge band in the late 70’s. Well-composed solo.

There are so many, scorching sweet 70's rock solos to emotive steel guitar, whatever fits the mood of the song (or yourself). This one is def one of my favorites, it's quirky and unique and fits the song great. Starts at about 2:05.

It was played using Clapton's old "The Fool" SG, which Todd Rundgren had in his studio when XTC recorded the album.

Check out this solo by Danny Gatton starting at 4:10...

I think the first minute is especially great because he goes way out on a harmonic limb then ends it with a car horn sound.

Why not?

And here's a sad song about loss with an amazing modern solo by Guthrie Govan starting at about the 5:00 mark.

Joe Walsh at the height of his power. The penultimate exhibit of electric blues. Solo starts at 2:35 and runs through the last verse to the end of the song. Perhaps the best use of Echoplex and wah ever peformed.

I've long held the notion that you can only really call yourself a guitar player when you can play 'guitar man'.
Note, I can't actually play this.
Yet.

to a place it had never gone before

Well no offence, but isn't that perhaps just a tad hyperbolic? But then, Gilmour is indeed one of the all time greats, and his playing is always superb. And when someone doesn't like his playing? Well let's let you do it and we'll see how YOU fare :D

One of my fave solos of all time is Comfortably Numb. The man's a bloody genius on that one.
