American Beauty, then Grateful Dead, then Europe 72,.... then get this book and learn about the brilliance of Robert Hunter, John Barlow, and the Dead as a whole. The book will blow your mind. Then.....keep on Truckin'

Lots of good suggestions here. The four albums mentioned will definitely be a good smorgasbord of some of the best from Jerry, Bobby, Phil, Bill, Pigpen and Co.

    Amen!
    These are my choice.
    So many great songs!
Robert Hunter was a great, evocative lyricist.
RIP, and Thanks, Robert and Jerry.

I would say a concert over an album, but Jerry, Brent, and Vince are busy actually being the dead, and DeadCo has the music but no magic, so I guess I would say a combination of Europe 72 & American Beauty/Workingman's Dead.

I actively dislike the Dead (just my opinion, not a value judgement), and even I like a lot of American Beauty and Workingman's Dead.

I’d go with Europe 72 also. The best Dead is live Dead, but of their live albums, Europe 72 is pretty accessible, has a real variety of styles, and they fixed some of the warts by overdubbing some vocals after the fact. I never listen to it anymore but when I was first into the Dead (77-78) I listened to it all the time.

or don’t buy an album. Go to Live Music Archive and stream almost any show from 72-74 or from 77. Hard to go wrong in those years... I had a handful of tapes when I was first into them, but now it’s ALL out there for streaming anytime you want.

Their best one...which is their first one, IMO. They sound like a fun, hopped up, psychedelic garage band.

If you’re into acoustic music check out “Bears choice” the one with the track “dark hollow” that’s my favorite dead album

If you want a concert to try, out of the hundreds, people like May 9, 1977, they played Buffalo, NY.
