I have a cheap Musician's Gear guitar stand, but I'm wary of putting any fine guitar on it.

Any suggestions for a really good/safe/balanced/stable guitar stand?

I like Herc stands. But what ever you do make sure the neck of the guitar is supported.

I have a beautiful wooden Taylor stand that supports the bottom and back of the guitar. One day I was standing next to the stand with a nice Martin in it and slightly bumped the guitar. The Martin rotated in the stand and went down sideways landing on the head stock. Luckily it was on carpet and the bump was very slight so it didn't cause any damage. On a hard surface it could see the head stock breaking off with a similar impact. Now I avoid using any stand that allows lateral rotation of the guitar.

+6 on Hercules (the one that has the swinging headstock gates). If you're gigging on a crowded stage, it is virtually impossible to know the guitar off the stand. Very solid and stable too.

make that +7, and for the same reasons that telepraise stated - uber sturdy, wide stance, and many times safer than the cheap A-frame stands

Best? There isn't any such thing.

Some people may like the really little ones that fit in a pocket. Others may prefer the hand crafted hardwood ones that look really nice in a living room. Everyone is different.

Any suggestions for a really good/safe/balanced/stable guitar stand?
Oh, that's a different question entirely.

I happen to like the König & Meyer stands.

It's next to impossible to knock an instrument out or tip one over with these things. I use them for all the instruments I have. Cello, trumpet, keys, and guitar.
