I think Whiskey Myers' self-titled album from this year should be on the list.

The two on the list that I've heard ("While I'm Livin'" and "Jaime") are good ones, so I'm glad they're on there (if only in the we-like-when-others-share-our opinions sense).

I think Gary Clark Jr.'s "This Land" should be on there. I just think it's a beast of an album. But that's just me.

“In The Morse Code Of Brake Lights” by The New Pornographers. I think I like every song. YMMV. If you listen to this, don’t listen to 30 seconds and say “that’s crap”, your opinion will not be valid. Listen to the whole thing and if you think it’s crap, your opinion is valid. Well written songs. Not the same old stuff. Great musicians. Well produced. Good hooks.

Not a terrible list by RS lowest common denominator standards, but as usual it's incredibly conventional. You just as easily could have listed the best selling records of the year and had the same list.

I would have added "Schlagenheim" by Black Midi to the list, but way too weird for them these days. Also, I can't believe "Magdalene" by FKA Twigs was only 36th. Typical RS, anything too weird or British gets an automatic downgrade. Why is RS even still a thing in 2019?

    I must be a dinosaur.

I think I counted ten acts I've heard of and about 8 that I could actually name a song by them.

    Okay, I am a dinosaur.

Only one on the list that caught my attention this year was Sturgill Simpson "Sound and Fury" and I LOVE that album!

Completely agree re: Gary Clark, Jr. It had been years since I loved an album front-to-back like “This Land” and it’s outside my general set of genres. Just great music.

donneth thine Flame Suits. here is Tamer of Bantha's quick capsule reviews.

    Wilco: needs to retire

Danger Mouse: a complete joke. has all the talent of one of those dunking bird desk ornaments

Bon Iver: has been pathetic, neutered, milque toast, faux folksy Non-Rock since they / he / she started. execrable

Vampire weekend: see above, except they were stupid enough to think that they should purchase amplifiers. and then their parents gave them the money to do it. a tough break for the rest of the world

The National: see above. minus amplification but now add horns and tunes longer than 4:30 that will either make you want to eat Zzz-quil or a bullet, possibly both

Nick Cave: zero fun or humour - a pair of woolen underpants no one ever wants to wear

Da Baby, Album name "Baby on Baby," - this dweeb has a song title named "goin baby." can we airlift him a set of dictionaries? super dumb.

Lizzo: i heard one song. i did not hate it. easily ignored background music.

Bad Bunny: had at least one good single recently. he seems talented. or at least above the bare minimum amount of talent which the existing music conglomerates will allow to traverse the airwaves these days

Lana Del Rey: some rich girl from the valley trying to act tough and get a leg up on the career she really wants (hint: actress). her "music" is merely an accessory / side hustle to achieving this ultimate aim. also: her guitar player is straight garbage. really embarrassing. i would rather listen to peak Tiffany or Debbie Gibson while being waterboarded

Billie Eilish: actually has talent and writes some clever tunes that don't suck.

The Black Keys: how do these weasels still have a career? they've been around for at least 9 or 10 years. i've heard exactly 3 good songs. 3 minutes a piece... hmmm that's 2 years of combined living between the guitar player and drummer per listenable minute of creative output. did anyone save the receipt? is it too late to return these guys?

fendrguitplayr, you made me late to a wedding party because i had to type all this. i'm pouring some scotch now.

God Save Us All from these hack frauds pretending to be real musicians.

To tamer, a rebuttal of sorts.

    Wilco. Harsh, but?
Dangermouse. Made a fabulous record with Sparklehorse. Dunno bout the rest of his stuff. Maybe it was the Sparklehorse.
    Bon Iver. With you there.
Vampire Weekend. Taking your word here.
    The National. Ditto.
Nick Cave. All my friends like him more than I do.
Da Baby. I’m probably not the target demographic for this.
Lizzo. Sorry, how can you not love Lizzo?
Bad Bunny. Don’t know at all. Will check out.
Lana Del Rey. Hard to tell if this is just a role. But I still like some of the music. Shoot me?
    Billie Eilish. Will check out.
Black Keys. Like a lot. Don’t have the new one.

Anywho, chuckled at your review. I actually thought the list wasn’t awful as these things go. I might’ve put Orville Peck on there but I only know the singles/videos. Sharon van Etten deserves to be on there. Seriously, could’ve been worse.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

Did I get drunk and write this? Because it sounds like things I write when I’m drunk.

Thanks for the recommend sir. i'll check out that Sharon Van Etten tomorrow.

and i would be a real curmudgeon if i did not at least admit that Wilco and Nick Cave did some really heady and excellent stuff earlier in their respective careers. stuff i certainly enjoyed.

The Lizzo tunes i have heard are not bad. i kinda feel like she is Santigold 2.0 is all. maybe i'm wrong and her 2nd and 3rd albums will be stunning works of brilliance. The Machine is designed to create (and promote) more of The Machine. i understand it conceptually, but it is hard for me to have a positive emotional response to it. i hope i am not just randomly spouting quotes from Blade Runner as the ethanol interferes with my brain, haha.

anyway, i am pleased you got a laugh out of my post and took it in the spirit which it was intended. have a good evening.

I don't think I've gone more than a week without listening to it since the day it came out. It's got heavy stuff, fun stuff, traditional and newer-style songs, great playing, great writing, rock, punk, blues, reggae, R&B...

I just can't get tired of it.

I guess I'm way outta the loop, and glad I am I suppose.
I might be tempted to listen to the Todd Snider one, and maybe even the Bruce offering.
