Recently, Mike Beck has been posting links to some live stuff we did a long time ago in Big Sur. Several of them are on the b-benders group part of Facebook, and more are on Mike's Facebook page. There are 6 or 7 songs done so far (maybe not all have been put on either of the Facebook areas yet) , and they are on a Google Drive that I set up. I'll try to see if I can post links to the Google Drive on this site, as well. Not very technically accomplished with Google Drive, but in the next day or two, should be able to get something up...

I should add that this was an impromptu bar gig. I hadn't played with this band before, and the drummer (some guy named Gene Parsons...) hadn't either. We all had a very good time.

Incidentally, the instructional recording was done in two locations - the first side was at Gene's place in Fort Bragg, CA. The second was at Robb Strandlund's home in Southern California, and that one was me and Robb. Gene wasn't present for that part.

That would be great Bob, I love how smoothly you play. I listened to the b-bender recording you did, you remark on the fluidity it gives the player. Unfortunately for me and a lot of other players, my bender playing tends to sound mechanical. I thought most benders sounded like that until I heard you and Clarence.

So it looks like all of the videos should be viewable, and better yet, downloadable. Wish I could say it was due to my great ability with Google Drive, but this is all still guesswork for me. Anyway, it worked.

I'd appreciate any comments, positive or negative, as Mike Beck said that these videos are the best views he's seen of me actually playing, so hopefully, it will clarify positions, approaches, bender use, etc...

    Don:

No problem - I had to think about it for a while to re-create the sequence. I had gone to Northern California on a short vacation in around March, 1977, right after I took the California Bar Exam - visited a bunch of wineries in Napa and Sonoma Counties, and then went on up to Fort Bragg to visit with Gene. That's when we did the first part of the "training" recording. A few weeks later, I was back in SoCal, and got together with Robb, and we recorded what turned out to be the second part. Haven't listened to either part for several years, but I think part of what I did with Robb was to go over a fairly difficult lick I did on his Polydor album, but I'm not sure anymore...

Those videos with you and Mike, et al are great...they do show your hand positions well...

This is perhaps a better question for Mike, but is the guy on bass the same guy who played bass on the Montana Rose tunes Mike did a few years ago?

Sorry I'm late to the dance. I love Bob's approach to fills and solos as he never rushes into them, which adds a bit of tension/anticipation. Great feel and sense of timing.
