I want to sing the praises of this guitar I picked up used over the summer, the Ibanez AM153. This is an ES339-sized semi-hollow. It's great. Before getting into it, here's a quick code for Ibanez model names. The "AM" prefix refers to the smaller ES339-size guitars, and "AS" for the ES-335 size. The number suffix refers to quality, the higher the number the better the guitar. The ones you usually see in the store (ie, Guitar Center) are the lower-tier "Artcore models." These would be the AM53, AM73, and AM93. The AM93 seems to be most common. It's pretty good, about on par with the Epiphone ES-339 that people generally like very much as a great bang-for-your-buck guitar.

The AM153 is part of the higher-tier "Artstar" line. It is a dramatic step up, in my opinion. I'm surprised you rarely see these in stores, because they are really great. Honestly I thought it was better than the Gibson ES-339. And at $999, the Ibanez is a great value. Fit and finish is great, including binding and very nice rounded fret ends. Super 58 pickups are great. The neck PU splits with a toggle. Ash body, ebony fretboard, bone nut. Neck is 3-piece Nyotah/Maple, which is probably the one area where they saved cost on this guitar. All I will say is the neck and overall guitar feels, plays, and sounds great. It has a rich and full sound unplugged (some people don't care about that, but I think the way it sounds acoustically definitely translates to what you hear amplified). Both pickups sounds great, no mud in the neck (which you sometimes get in Gibson-scale guitars). Very, very versatile, and the huge range of sounds you can get. Even sounds good with gain. The comfort, quality, and overall playability of this guitar is very high.

There are not a ton of options out there for ES-339 size semis. The Epiphone model gets mentioned a lot. Trust me, this Ibanez is far superior. Oh, and it comes with a hardshell case! Especially when you consider the case, the $999 price is a great value. If you ever have a chance to check one out, I would encourage that.

That’s really cool looking. I sold a Memphis 339 that I want back. Love the tone and smaller size of those semi hollows. Enjoy it

1981, I was looking for a Gibson 335. Checked at least 10 of them from newer to used. For the large mount of money they wanted, I could not find one that felt right.

Stopped in a little shop in Tacoma and was stopped in my tracks be a beautiful Ibanez AS200. Loved the looks, feel and sound. Just an amazing instrument.

It was stolen in 1983 and I was devastated. I had a gig that night and a buddy loaned me his sons Fernandez strat. Great guitar and it started a lifetime love of strats....but I digress.

When the insurance money came in, I cold not find an AS200 anywhere, but I did find their new model (AM205) at a store and it was soon mine.

Great guitar, but again, it was not the AS200. So, went looking again. Came across a Gibson Firebird (Just like my idol Johnny Winter played) in a grungy pwn shop and wound up trading the AM205 straight across to the Bird.

Alas, after gigging with the Firebird I found out it was just not the guitar for me.....more trading and wound up with a Les Paul Special.....

Anyway, check out an Ibanez AM205.....I believe it was one of the first, if not the first, smaller bodied semi hollows.

I have an AM153 also, What a great guitar! Between that and my AS93, I no longer had a need for my Les Paul Traditional, ES-335 and ES-137 and sold all three. The AM153 with the Tri-sound was thick covers everything the Les Paul did and copped the ES137 tone pretty easily too. I am way ahead dollar wise and much happier with the Ibanez guitars.

It’s odd to me there do not seem to be many of these AM/AS153s around. You almost never hear mention of them or see them on Reverb. GC carries the lower-lever Artcore models and people seem to like them. But I have never seen one of the Artstars. And they’re still pretty affordable.

Here is my as73g.

I snagged it when i was out and about and checked out a local shop one day. It was their 3 year anniversary, so they had tons of guitars around.
My first act in choosing guitars is I grab the neck by the first few frets. The right size neck moves on to acoustic playing. After that, I plug in.
This guy has a fabulously shaped neck.
it sounded good unplugged, and I knew the pickups were going so I didn't care much about them.
I played 2 just like it but this one was the best.
Got it for 300 bucks brand new!

It's the only non partscaster I plan on keeping.

All the artcore/star series are similar in build quality, IMO. Hence the near universal love the lower tiered ones get.

The higher the number, the better the parts, finish (Wood veneers mostly) and fretwork is.

Mine only needed the frets polished. I changed the stock mudbuckers for a set of tonerider hbp90s that sound good in it.

Ibanez makes some seriously good semi hollow guitars. They're super consistent.

Congrats!

Oh man that is nice, love the color and the grain. I would love one, but I've got too many 335 types already.
