Bee Gees And The Beatles

I hope that you are all well.

It just occurred to me that The Bee Gees achieved local/regional fame before The Beatles at a much younger age; they were on TV in 1960. Barry was only 14 and the twins were 11. Maybe because they had been a group years before that time in 1958.

I love both groups and maybe this isn't the best comparison, but it's darn interesting to me---and should be to you too.

They used to sing at the local dirt track speedway during the intervals.

Speedway was big in those days and it drew a good crowd.

There's levels of breaking through. I bet we could find several dozen groups with the level of recognition the Bee Gees had before 1965. Reminds me just what a debt we owe to John Lennon and his chums.

Love the BGs! I remember a time not long ago when they were the objects of ridicule, especially from the critics. Most of them wouldn't know a good melody/song if it bit them on their backside.

One Pasadena DJ played the death out of the song (New York Mining Disaster 1941) saying it was The Beatles under another name. ---- Maurice Gibb

My first recollection of The Bee Gees was 1967's "To Love Somebody". I was a freshman in college and you couldn't walk through the Student Union building without hearing it. I love their early material.

Holiday is my favorite Bee Gees song, always has been, but any of their earlier stuff very good. Of course their disco era made them superstars, but...you know...disco?

I saw Speedway racing a few times in London. It was HILARIOUS and quite brilliant.
