This is probably my personal favourite BB number.
And I know that you know,
but Blondie Chaplin sings lead on that!
The harmonies! The Everly's x 2!
I love Carl’s solo tone on this track!
Yes! I love the solo Brian version on the Smile boxed set too.
I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't. Always thought it sounded so different from everything else on that album. Thanks for the heads up.
It's great to see some Beach Boys love here. One of my all time favorite bands! They were ahead of their time. Generally considered less cool than the Beatles, they were every bit their equal. Listen to the writing and arrangement on "I Get Around". Three distinctly different sections with intros, outros and transitions. Add an unconventional chord progression and those unbeatable harmonies. This was 1964! Compare it to the 1964 output of the Beatles, Stones, and Kinks, and suddenly you have a different perspective. Brian was absolutely on top of it!
Compare SMiLE with Pepper's. Yes, SMiLE was completely written and recorded BEFORE Sgt Pepper's. Sadly, due to Brian's declining mental state, the BB version was never released until 2011. Brian recorded a remake of the entire album in 2004 with his own band. Now THAT'S a masterpiece! Again, they were ahead of the Beatles.
In 2017 I was part of an ensemble that performed Sgt Pepper in it's entirety as a 50 year tribute to the album. We had a full rock band accompanied by a choir, full string and horn section, a harpist, and even a sitar! We worked 6 months to put it all together. A daunting challenge to say the least, we pulled it off quite respectably. At the "afterglow", we were feeling quite proud of our accomplishment. I leaned over to a couple of the other musicians and asked, "Now, do you think we could pull off SMiLE?" I was answered with a couple of blank stares and one "never". I couldn't agree more.
Long live Brian Wilson!
Cool. I haven't seen any major portion of the group live together since this show:
Nice cover of a great BB song...
Love that group!
Deep thinkers want to know, why Al and Carl got stuck wearing the same color sweater.
Yes, I confess - as a kid I let it trouble me.
Anyway, the music and the harmonies/vocals are just superb. The song would be far better IMO if it hadn't been stuck with these radioactive lyrics. Just a shame. Yet another Mike Love fumble.
This is an abomination!
No worse than what Mike Love did to the band.
Beach boys at their peak- it will totally change what you think about them.
Love the Beach Boys. One of the greatest American bands ever.
I am so glad I got to see them live when I did, in early 1981. Dennis and Carl were still alive and in the group, and even Brian was with them along with Mike, Al, and Bruce. Brian was seated at the grand piano, smoking cigarettes most of the time.
