Be honest: How many of you play your guitar in front of a mirror?

“Negative, Ghostrider...” it’s bad enough that I have to hear myself. Seeing myself make guitarface is *not* going to make anything better...

It’s been many years. Can’t see a need for it anytime soon

This is excellent advice, especially for young bands. Nobody's going to tell you to your face that you look like a goober on stage, but when you see the evidence yourself... shame is a good motivator.

I'll admit, I've checked myself out. Like others have noted, it can be cringe inducing. Usually the guitar is by far the coolest thing in the mirror.

If I watched myself play, I would realized how goofy I truly look, and this would prevent me from ever performing again in front of people. I know I make horrible guitar faces, and even had a friend who would sit in the audience and laugh out loud as I played. I could hear him over the music, and knew the reason for his laughing. He always told me how it looked like I was in pain, or constipated as I performed. It brought him great joy.
I don't think I could watch myself anyway. I become very engrossed in the instrument, and tune out everything around me. My son-in-law once used his phone to do a video of me practicing in my room, and I had no idea what was going on. He told me later that I was a big hit with all his buddies, because they kept asking for him to "show us that old guy shredding!"

    I haven’t since I was about 14.
Up til I was 14, it’s about all I could do.

I never take Benadryl and never try to look cool.

Benadryl makes me look more drool than cool.

At 14 I couldn't even look cool, never mind play guitar.

The “cool” look has completely evaded me, too.
When I was a posing kid, all the stuff I’ve figured out in my 50+ years of playing was like magic, to me.
Now it’s still as magical, but I can actually do a lot of it.

Yeah in video I look pretty much like I'm in a stupor, or possessed.
Unfortunately I cannot fix my visual affectations and play guitar well at the same time.
Maybe some of the time but I end up back in the trance state eventually, which is when the good stuff seems to happen.
Listening, thinking, planning and playing is pretty engaging.

I always give a guitar the "mirror test" before I buy it.

Now that I'm the front-man in my band, I have to be more energetic and engaging. Seeing myself on video really helped with that. I've learned that while I'm in the middle of a solo, making eye-contact with someone who's dancing can be quite fun and helps build a connection with the people on the floor.

I've had a beard for decades, so I don't even use a mirror to shave. Given the fact that most mornings I wake up looking like this...
    Theoden.jpg

...I try to stay away from mirrors as much as possible. I have no delusions of coolness. Looking cool while performing onstage? Not with what I have to work with.

I'm thinking it would be the opposite of really cool.

There is no sense adding visuals to the audio assault I'm inflicting on those around me.
