Comming home today , I live up on top of a butte , I went into a 4 wheel drive skid one side of the road is a culvert with a 50 foot drop the other side is a ditch with a hill , I started to slide uphill towards the deep culvert and as I crossed the mid line I crancked my wheels in the opposite direction ( feet off of the gas & brake of course ) spun around and went off the road just below the hill , facing down hill, I put the truck in reverse going back a few inches and hanging up , I placed the truck into 4 low and plowed forward back onto the road turned the truck around and went on my way no issues , had I gone off the road down the 50 foot culvert , no one would have found me ( not good) , but I was lucky no harm no foul

my point is even if you have 4 wheel drive watch out for 4 wheel drive skids , view it like a 2 wheel drive skid with all 4 wheels at the same time.
be carefull out there you guys and stay safe , get home to your families in the same condition you left ! Have good tires , a full tank for traction and keep your vehicle healthy.

Be carefull !

Glad you got your Christmas present early. I went through the FWD guys can handle the program no matter what, until I rolled my truck all alone up in the mountains in the middle of the night. I crossed the Kern River in the dark of night just to get to walk five miles to where a phone was. Crossing the Kern River in darkness may not have been the dumbest thing I've ever done, but it ranks way up there. Glad you made it through the ordeal with no injury. I reckon we won't know how much it scared you unless we get a laundry report from your wife! ;)

HAHA, LOL
this is the second time I have had a close call with 4 wheel drive last one was about 15 years ago , so I was fairly calm during the ordeal and as long as the wheels keep facing down all is OK , reation time is a factor and the ability to take your foot off the gas and brakes during the event , is key to minimize the outcome , the other is to keep the vehicle upright , I always have a full tank of gas ( extra Ballast ) and new tires ( got the truck back on monday from the mechanic for its winterization and oil change ) glad I did not have anyone in the truck with me , and I was able to drive out of the ditch in 4 low with out issue , diaper change not necessary LOL

but all kidding aside you guys be carefull it doesnt matter how good of a driver you may be stuff happens , be prepared and please be safe always .

and besides if bad stuff happens to you who will we have to tease on this site?

Me and my brother used to go help get people out of ditches during big storms in northern New Mexico. Nothing like BC I'm sure, but it could get rowdy back in the day. We used our pop's '79 Toyota pickup (first year of the factory 4x4 conversion, "Son of Land Cruiser"). We pulled mostly thankful folks out, but it was the bigass V-8 rigs with Hillbilly springs and mud bog tires that weren't as thankful. There was a lot of them trucks stuck. You'd see them driving the wife's SUV after that, generally, so good point on being careful, mindful and having the right gear and a tune, OP, thanks.

The key was that you had experience and knew what to do.

I still remember back in '74 riding with my Mother in a '69 VW Bug after an ice storm. I was about 4 at the time and we were going down a steep decline on the highway. The super lightweight car just got picked up by the wind and started rotating. My Mother was not an experienced driver and just let go of the wheel and yelled while the car did a full 360 degree spin....TWICE, before ending up facing forward again.

It still makes me laugh looking back. Luckily, the speed limit was 55 mph back then and she was only going about 45 at the time as the ditches were very deep along that road and those VW's didn't have air bags....or seat belts.

Glad to hear you're all right.
Treacherous weather I hear from my friend/mentor in BC at the moment.
Maybe just buy the big chicken some gloves for the time being and ride it around town.

Its 5 degrees here, and with the windchill well under -10. There was only a light dusting of snow, but it was enough. I briefly jumped on the highway here. Once there I saw drivers doing 60 mph, and a tow truck attempting to retrieve a car that had left the highway and was at least 50 yards below it. Drivers make bad decisions. Glad you're ok!

I use the 4wd only in very difficult situations. No way does it make the vehicle more roadworthy or capable. Extremely useful, however 4WD is a blunt instrument

I was driving to work on I-275 in Michigan when I hit a patch of ice and went spinning off into the ditch. I must have did about two or three 360's before I went in. It was the early 90's so I had no cell phone. I was way down in the ditch. It was full of cold as heck water. I rolled down the window and when I tried to climb out I slipped on the cold, wet door and went right into the freezing water. I was up to my waist in it. It was so cold, I felt like I couldn't feel my legs. I was way down in the ditch. I was having a lot of trouble trying to climb out of the ditch back up to the road. I started to get scared that no one saw me and I was in big trouble. Just then I look up and a gas station tow truck pulls up. Out jumps two teenage boys. They said they were behind me and saw me go in. I asked how much to get pulled out. When they told me the price I didn't have enough money. These two young men said "you can just come by tomorrow and pay us, we'll be at the shop. Don't say anything if our boss is there. He'll get mad if he knew we helped you without paying first". They pulled me and my car out. Miraculously it started. I went by later after work and payed the kids. The boss wasn't there. I'd have been screwed if they didn't see me go in.

It's kinda funny, but sad at the same time. Every time we get snow and especially ice, in our area, seattle region, you see a lot of cars stuck on the side of the road but many of them are the big 4wd rigs. They're always the guys heading down the road passing all of the cautious drivers. My other pet peeve are the people who shouldn't even be on the road going too slow and causing problems.
I think we're going to have to go 4 wheelin' tomorrow because of the weather though. I hope I'm not one of the guys in the big 4wd truck stuck on the side of the road.

one thing I do in this kind of weather: I have sandbags in the bed, carry a shovel, flares, headlamps, gloves, tow cables/chain, and a come along just in case.

stay safe out there
