It's getting ridiculous. And we live in the country. Last night some detonations shook the walls and windows. No house on my dead end road is setting them off, so the closest house is probably 1/8-1/4 mile away. I saw a raid on the news a day or two back where they had confiscated big M80 style crackers but were literally 4-5" long and probably 1.5" diameter! It's jut too effing much and out of hand. One dog spent the night cowering in a corner.

I don’t know what that is but it is much larger than an M80.

In college, had the back porch of a rental house burn because of an errant bottle rocket from somewhere in the neighborhood. Firefighters saved the house, which was a three-story wood frame. Had to convince the cops that we didn’t start it.

Bad in Chicago this year - people aren’t running out of ammo until 2-3am.

If only fireworks displays were like the Hogmanay/New Year's Eve one in Oban on the west coast of Scotland in 2011.

An error meant that the 30 minutes' worth of pyrotechnics was done and dusted in 30 seconds.

Same thing happened in San Diego in 2012.
Distant but complete (you have to click Watch On YouTube for this one)

Up close but misses the beginning

Last night I had to tell yet another neighbor not to shoot their fireworks over my house. It's the same argument every time, "There's nowhere else!"

"Shoot them over your own house..."

"What?!! No way!"

This is despite the fact that they're illegal, last night it looked like the bombing of Dresden around here. It generally starts around Easter and runs through Christmas.
I have to admit, if my neighbors were that immune to logic and empathy, I'd consider dressing up like a ninja and sneaking over to remove all the tire stem cores at 3 am. Months afterwards of course.

My doggy is ten months old. We didn’t make a big deal out of the boom booms around us and then neither did he.
I wouldn't be surprised if your doggie changes his mind about the fireworks. We've had dogs that didn't pay the least attention to the fireworks, then when they got older, they were irritated, some times terrified by them.

Yeah, that was my point poorly worded! The one I saw confiscated on TV was just plain color like many M80's, no decoration.

When they started out launching Space X project missiles near me, I sent in a complaint on my phone to an internet website the fire department put up to alert them of illegal fireworks. Then I worried that they might send out a firetruck full of able-bodied firemen to beat me up for ratting out their relatives.

In all honesty my neighbors had two rounds of fireworks. Ranger did fine through the first round. About three quarters of the way through the second round he started getting fidgety. I nonchalantly took him in and he was fine. Pushing it and having him go haywire wouldn’t have been helpful.

I hope he continues to weather the fireworks storm that is sure to come at least a couple of times a year. Here in California, it has become a literal firestorm. Several people dead and several houses destroyed in Los Angles and other localities here. A little girl 8 years old was killed over the "holiday" by illegal fireworks. Nothing seems to deter the use of them.

I agree getting your dog away from the fireworks was the right thing to do. Once they start getting upset, it just continues to magnify until they just get out of their heads.

Ranger was still doing okay but I had an objective to keep him that way.

I wonder if the cops would’ve been called on me if I stood in my front yard, strapped on my guitar, and cranked my amp to 10 and wailed on it for an hour and a half. 🤔

You'd better have a backpack with food and water and be wearing your Depends if you're going to compete around here. The racket around these parts goes on for days.

For about 10 years, we had people shooting profession fireworks (mortars) all around us for at least a month leading up to and after the 4th and the cops and the fire department would do absolutely nothing. In fact, they told us they were ordered to do nothing. It was like a combat zone all around us. I'd say, "They won't start to care until a neighborhood burn down." Well, that's not exactly what happened. Four years ago, the police botched the detonation of a cache of illegal fireworks, injuring 17 and damaging many homes. Since then, it's gotten much better, and the press is actually covering the problem, whereas they didn't really do so before.

This 70-year-old, Massachusetts man died yesterday setting off a firework(s).

I like how the neighbor said that they’re illegal but “okay-ish” on the 4th and how it was an accident and shouldn’t be held against anyone. What an idiot.

I just hope they’re done in my neighborhood. Normally they didn’t bother me too much but now my dog completely freaks out. I try to get him outside to do his business earlier or wait until it quiets down. As soon as I get him out, though, someone sets one off and he freaks out to the point that I’m afraid he will strangle himself on the leash pulling to get inside.

I hope he's feeling better. :(

I’m a member on a car forum and one of the other regulars on there has a cousin that blew himself up over the weekend

Apparently was lighting a mortar next to one he thought had gone off.. It hadn’t and went off right in his face

Burnt his face and hand and he’s being put in a an Induced coma for the next 3 days

So if you’re gonna do it be EXTRA CAREFUL

Last night we were out walking the dogs. I was telling my wife, who likes to pick up any trash along the way not to touch any fireworks. I had seen a long tube about 2.5 inches in diameter and about 18 inches long the night before when just Alex and I were walking. When we came to it, I thought this thing has been here at least twenty-four hours.

Before I reached down to pick it up to put in the trash bag, I used the tips of the cattle prod I carry on walks to hoist one end of it. The thing was quite heavy. I thought it should be light, there's still stuff in there. I dropped the end that I was holding up on the ground, and a cap like sound went off and sparks flew out the end of it. We decide the street sweeper can have it.

This morning, I am thinking about that thing. I probably will go around there and burry the thing in case a kid might come along and hoist it. Or maybe call the fire department.

I called the fire department on the partially spent fireworks. Talked to a very nice Captain at the Fire Department closest to me. He said they'd get someone right out to dispose of it.
