Lalo Carillo is one of my all time favorite bass players. His playing on this cover of Room 335 (Larry Carlton) linked below is a perfect example of his utter mastery of the instrument. He is a true joy to watch and you can tell how much he is into the groove.

And another unknown favorite of mine is Riccardo Oliva. His dexterity blows my mind in this cover of Tribal Tech (Face First).

Try not to get too distracted by the guitar player in both videos. Matteo Mancuso is a show all by himself.

Jackie Wessel spent 25+ years in Leon Russell's band, and is himself a walking master class on how to be a solid bassist.

Cool. It's always great to watch an accomplished bass player.

They're my favourites, the unknown ones. They sum up what the instrument's for.

I've no idea whether these players are obscure, I may just be ignorant (I grew up with Motown through the 60s, but I'd never heard the name James Jamerson until I took up bass in the 90s), but huge respect to Taras Prodaniuk with Richard Thompson, Hutch Hutchinson with Bonnie Raitt and Tony Scherr with Bill Frisell.

I’m sure there are many more great bassists that I couldn’t name or recognize.
Hell, the same could be said of guitarists.

The late Henry Strzelecki, virtually unknown outside Nashville but who recorded on hundreds of major hits for many major stars. also, as a teenager, he wrote Long Tall Texan. He died in 2014 after being hit by a car in Nashville.

Al Cisneros is my favorite bassist. Not exactly unknown but there's not a whole lot of love for metal on this site.

Tatsu Mikami, Tim Bagshaw, and Dixie Dave Collins are also favorites of mine.

Brian Odgers holds it down on this record. Outside of some live stuff with John Surman I don’t think I’ve heard much else from him and I only know of him from this record. Though I guess he was on a bunch of stuff here and there.
