we all like what we like and, similarly, don't like what we don't like. I don't like halls of fame or 'greatest 100' or things like that. I find they are just counter to what things are all about, but I get that people do need to catalog and categorize.

When Dire Straits was 'elected' for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (my least favorite of all halls of fame) Knopfler did the Bartleby the Scrivener thing and just said, 'yeah, thanks, I'd prefer not to.' or like Yossarian he just said, 'I don't wanna'

No idea his reasoning, but I dig it. I have had a couple of things the last five years where I just did not do them and it 'puzzled people' and they were 'concerned' and I thought 'stick it' I don't wanna.

and when you don't have to, don't do it.

Genuine tributes and genuine admiration are awesome... but not a fan of crapola fake people who profit by 'celebrating' achievement while benefitting personally.

Saying no to Jann Wenner type people is a win.

It is my understanding that it costs $$ for the "priviledge" of being inducted into Wenner's R&R HOF.

Good on Knopfler...who gave Wenner the right to be the "official" R&R HOF??

I got bulled into participating in a committee once by and with a new tyrant from Ad Hill, and later there developed a very ugly, very public situation between us. That's enough about that story unless you want to talk about nyrrhic* victories, but I resolved afterward not to participate in anybody's anything unless I wanted to. That spared me from lots of aggravation and wasted time over the next ten or 15 years.

Edit: as a nod to thread topic, I would graciously accept induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Have them give me a call.

I pretty much agree with all of that. The "Rock Hall" is a bit of a sham.

I have my own R&R Hall of Fame, Chances are most of my candidates are not listed in the official one.

Every musician should go every couple years to find out how is famous and influential in music.

Interesting article.....and I absolutely support most of the contempt for the RRHOF.
That said, maybe if SOME of the Dire Straits alumni want to play, they should get John Mayer to fill in for Mark. Supposedly it worked for the Grateful Dead. ;);););););)

Music doesn't particularly work for polls and halls of fame at the artistic level. I think Bartok was supposed to have said that "Competitions are for horses, not musicians." Surely I am misquoting the composer, but this is the gist of it.

Knopfler’s in my music hall of fame.

I voted by buying his music.

    I bet he appreciates that!

Let me see if I got this clear. You pay them to honor you. Is that anything like paying to have your rear end smooched?

    It's the hall of lame.

Huge respect for Mr. Knopfler. He's no chimp on a bicycle.

The RRHF, to me, is like People magazine. It's a silly diversion to see who's there and to watch the performances if there's nothing else better going on at the moment. Like reading People while waiting in line at the market. Why anyone would take it seriously is beyond me-same with the Oscars, Emmys, etc.

Contests for art? Taking stranger(s) judgement on who's the best?

I think Mark Knopfler's response was professional, polite and makes perfect sense. Good for him.

I feel a bit bad for the other musicians in Dire Straits that seemed like they really wanted to play at the induction. They don't get the glory, solo career, and maybe the songwriting royalties that Mark Knopfler gets.

Can lump places like the Hard Rock Cafe in with the Hall of Shame. Both caricatures and the total antithesis of rock and roll...and as Groucho Marx put it, "I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member"
