I’ve been trying to figure this out. Just can’t quite get it right. What’s going on? Anybody know the trick and feel like tabbing it? I’m thinking they’re tuned in e flat but I could be wrong. I’d appreciate any help. Thanks.

    Standard tuning.....

It's in 'C'....I won't try to tab out the rhythm.....

    e -
    B ---------------------13
    G -----------12-------12
    D - 12 - 14
    A ----------------15
    E -

I hope that's clear enough for you. The vertical letters are the strings....the numbers are the frets...best I can do....I'm sure you can figure out the rhythm on your own.

If you're trying to play it just like they're doing it, on the fourth time the lead guitar player plays the intro lick, he messes up!

I haven’t watched Ken(?) play it. But it sounds to me like he’s bending the G string at the 7th fret, and resolving to a ‘C’ (f style) chord at the 10th.

Probably my fav Old 97s song!

I think what it difficult is that it sounds like he hits the root on the C.

OP, try bending the G string at 7th with your middle finger, hit the 2nd string at the 8th with your ring finger. Then move to a C chord with the root at the 10th fret. I think that will be the most economical movement. Tricky, but see if you can get it after trying a few times.

Edit: or maybe barre the 8th for the root. He may also be using a capo on the third fret.

Edit edit: or try bending the D string at the 12th, and hitting the G string at the 12th. Maybe easier to get to the C chord and root. ***my money is on this one***

    That sounds about right, thanks!

The video sure does look like he’s on the 10th fret though, he must tune to D standard?

Yep this is right. Play the first part with your index finger, and you don’t have to move from that box. He also hits the G, though, which would be on the B string 8th fret. And I can’t tell if the G string is a bend at the 8th or hammer-on to the 9th. It sounds best with a bend, but it’s trickier to get the G is all.

I definitely messed up my take on it..I'll blame it on just getting outta bed!.....he's playing it at the 8th fret for sure...that's obvious now that I look..lol..here's what I'm getting now. He does flub the lick a couple times that makes it sound like something else perhaps but what I've written below is the basic lick he plays.

    (h) = hammer on
    e..............................8
    B...................8.........8
    G.....8 (h) 9
    D......................10
    A
    E

Sometimes I hear him throwing in the (E) on the G string while he's doing the double stops

    e......8......8
    B......8......8
    G........(9)...(9)

He's being fairly sloppy and a lot of the lick are deadened notes too, which adds to it's rock and roll appeal....

I think that gets most of it though..

I got a solid Johnny thunders vibe to a good bit of the lead playing on that entire album, which is part of what I love about it. The loose punky swagger is just so much fun. Thanks for the help!
