I am learning banjo rolls now too. I started on them several months back, and I'll be working on them several months from now.

I'd like to point out one thing that I picked up from an instructional tape that altered my thoughts on banjo rolls.

Any lick where you assign the pick to one string, the middle finger to a string, and the ring finger to a string is essentially using the banjo roll technique. Just because something doesn't roll repeatedly doesn't mean it won't benefit from the banjo roll technique.

I am finding that learning to play non-repeating rolling licks with the other fingers appointed to strings is making my repeating rolls a little more fluid and helping my speed. A lot of ascending and descending licks really benefit from using those fingers, and the more of those I work on, the better I am doing on the actual repetitive rolls as well.

Anyway, it really helped my rolls to use those fingers in other things as well. It was a small eureka moment when I realized that the fingerpicking patterns in the licks were indeed rolls that simply weren't being repeated. That simple realization broke down some barriers for me and has helped my progress in developing my right hand.

Do tell the name of this vid, inquiring minds would like to know! Thanks!

I happened on a VHS copy of this on clearance for $3. It's from the "Getting the Sounds" series and is titled "Hot Nashville Guitar".

Amazon - Hot Nashville Guitar

This isn't the one-and-only instructional tape you'll ever need, but it's very usable and has some very practical stuff on it. The material is well presented and the tab was accurate. I can't play everything on there and don't really want to, but a few licks were really especially tasty and I'm working on them first.

I wish I had a DVD copy instead of a tape. I might actually buy one. I like it that much.

Thanks for letting me know. I have that on DVD too. I just need to find it and give it another looksie. Been a few years since I watched it. You're right, from what I remember it is very good.

It is good. He doesn't make a big deal out of the roll technique. He just says to use the pick for this string, the middle finger for the next one, and the ring finger for the next one. But, he does call that process "using the banjo roll technique", and he's right. It's just that playing his licks are fairly easy that way where doing a repetitive banjo roll to speed is a LOT harder.

Playing some of his licks as directed really made me realize that my hybrid picking had really progressed even though I can't do fast repetitive banjo rolls yet.
