About 25 times what my car is worth. And that proportion suits me just fine.
Building a collection of guitar gear: several thousand bucks
Bragging rights on TDPRI: priceless
The many thousands I have spent on guitars, amps, and PA gear over the past few years pales in comparison to the money I am going to go lay down on Thursday, at the local Ford dealer.
Got to keep all that expensive stuff dry and secure after all.
The days of shlepping my stuff in the open air of the truck are finally about to be over.
With one kid in college and two more on the way soon, I can't afford to spend tens of thousands on gear. In ten years, I have spent $1100 of my own money on gear. That figure does not include the reinvestment of (usually) modest profits I've made when reselling or trading.
I would imagine you need an appraisal of some sort. In 1990, my college roommate drove a 1973 LeMans. He and his dad had spent two years and thou$and$ completely rebuilding this thing -- it was gorgeous. He never had it appraised, though, so when he totaled it, he got $400 -- book value for that car.
