I am looking for a good source for true bakelite type pick guards. I like Angela's but not the price. Like the price of Guitar Mills but have never seen one. Anyone have source for a inspireing replica in the $10-$15 range?

McMaster-Carr supply company sells raw bakelite squares. It is under the name "Garolite" on their web site, but it is the same thing. One square is enough for two guards and with shipping will total about $10. I have cut my own from their Garolite and then sprayed it with Deft. It makes a very authentic pickguard, and even has the quart can "halo' on the underside. I believe there is a thread here on the Forum about making a bakelite/garolite guard.

Ron Kirn has a thread in which he makes a garolite pickguard.

I also made a pickguard from the stuff from McMaster Carr. Smells like CRAP when you cut it...mine came in a bit warped, but when you cut it, then screw it down, it's not so bad at all.

If anyone here decides to get the raw bakelite material from McMaster Carr and wants to help a fellow Tele-brother out...I asked them but they do not send stuff abroad to Germany...

If you don't want to DIY, check out the Callaham website. They make a gorgeous Bakelite guard.

    Ciao,

Thanks, I now remember reading about this a while back. Can you be a bit more specific. The McMaster-Carr site is confusing. Is their a Grade and Thickness you prefer?

    Thanks again.

Ed Hawley to the rescue! Ed--isn't it about time you posted some more on your build threads. The lack of photos and info from you and Buckocaster lately has been very difficult for some of us....
