What you do first is read the instructions.

In case they're missing, this is how it works: this type of strap-lock is released by pushing the button in the middle, unlike the Schaller type where you pull to release.

When you've separated the components, the saucer-shaped part goes on the outside of the strap with the actual lock passing through the middle of it, through the hole in the strap. Turn the strap over and place the big flat washer over the lock, then secure with the circlip in the machined groove in the body of the lock. Depending on how thick the strap is, this can be easy or tough to do, but make sure the clip is properly seated and fully home - square-nose pliers can help but take care not to damage the lock.

Once the assembly is completed correctly it will never loosen by itself; I've heard that the other screwed-together type has been known to do that.

The button screws provided are bigger and longer than the regular kind and quite hard to drive in by hand. Very secure, but experience has led me normally to re-use the regular button screws (provided they were good and tight to begin with), while keeping an eye open for any signs of loosening in use. If this does happen you can then use the bigger, longer ones instead.

take those back and get the Schallers. IMO a better design and less chance of failure

This isn't something worth getting into a major debate about, but if they're installed properly, exactly how are the Dunlops going to fail? Both designs have their good points and the Schallers may look tidier to some eyes. But they are more susceptible to wear and to the securing screw loosening; also they feature a casting that on the odd rare occasion has been known to fracture. The Dunlops are fit-and-forget, plus the fact that, if necessary for any reason, the buttons can be used with a regular strap.

If I were given or sold a guitar with the Schallers already fitted, I wouldn't bother to change them, but if I'm buying a new set of locks my money's being spent on the Dunlops.

The Dunlops, if not lubed, can fail to properly lock. I have seen that up close and personal! I now use Schallers....

Fair point, I suppose, though it's never happened to me in all the years. But then I tend to keep the straps attached nearly all the time. Anyway, it's not the end of the world either way and both kinds seem a better idea than an enforced meeting between guitar and floor.

I've used the Dunlops for well over twenty years, and I've never had a problem with them failing.

i've seen the ball bearings fail and the straplock seperates and the guitar falls. with the schaller, even if there was a failure the "cup" will still hold the guitar onto the strap. IF properly installed

no big issue, i just prefer Schallers. YMMV
