I have completely forgotten how to sit at a computer for 14 hours without losing my mind. I know that i'm lucky to have a job, but this is just horrible, especially because I don't have any work, so I have to invent projects to do so that I can report that I've done something on Friday. Vacation is nice, but the transition back to work is rough. I also wonder if they are spinning down my job, because it has been too quiet the past month or so...

On the whole, I'd rather be playing my guitar right now.... Anybody else in shock on the first day back?

Not too bad. We have a conference next week so it's kind of a down/prep week for that. My super-gracious employer gave us off from 12/23 through this morning. I got pretty fair at ukulele over the break, but didn't play an inordinate amount of guitar. I did finish planning out my 2023 goals on the thing; more jazz, more fingerstyle, more playing along to records.

I do have a project due this afternoon that I had to work on/think about over the time off. Fortunately, it involved cataloging the mountain of work my completely new team executed in 2022. Great to kick off the new work year by looking back at all the good stuff we've done and getting to crow about it a little.

I would however rather be playing guitar.

Not really in shock, but procrastinating, and I have a a fair bit to get done by Monday, which is the start of the new semester. I opted to have two courses I teach to have them on-line as we got a new puppy over Christmas and I figured it'd be better if I was around more than less. I don't relish the additional time at the computer, I'm at it enough of it as it is. However, I am looking forward to being in the classroom.

I'm confused. I work 5-6 days a week with a 40 minute commute each way. I'm normally complaining that I don't have enough time to do anything. My company gives us two days for Christmas and two days for New Years. I took a vacation day before the Christmas break so, with the weekends, I ended up with a 5 day break for Christmas and a 4 day break for New Years. You would think I would have been happy and relaxed but I actually started getting anxiety because I'm used to the structure of working. Particularly over Christmas I had to check to see what day of the week it was. I guess the crap weather didn't help either. It was extremely cold so I was holed up in the house for a few days.

My day back was filled with extremely boring but mandatory meetings. If I'd known I would have just taken a personal day.
A three hour safety meeting with a guy whose accent is so thick that I can't understand what language he's in at any given moment.
The afternoon meeting was active shooter training, which I can't even go into here.

Welcome to 2023!

I feel obligated to point out that 2023 is literally a blank sheet of paper. Each of you can make whatever you want to make of it. If you don't like what you do, then *please* spend a few minutes as soon as possible and ask yourselves a few simple questions (and be honest with yourselves):

* What kind of *person* would you like to be?
* How would THAT *person* address the "5 Fs" for the new year? The 5 Fs are: Finances, Family, Fitness, Faith, & Fun.

Don't slumber thru another year writing-off your "Finances" by continuing to do a job that does NOTHING for you! Become the *person* that you know you should become.

A vacation is supposed to leave you refreshed and ready to dive into work with enthusiasm and energy. But whenever I take a vacation it makes my desire for retirement even greater.....
Me too.

Starting in like 2018 or so, my wife and I started taking off the last week of the year. While there were occasions when I did return to work feeling energized, it's been moving towards me feeling kind of reluctant to get back into the grind.

Today was my first day back, and I really had an exceptional amount of reluctance this time. I'm a senior developer on a project that's grossly understaffed, with 'phase 1' supposed to be completed by this June. I was actually the only full-time person on the roster until mid-December, with two recent additions being a DB specialist and a junior developer, so I'm still carrying most of the workload.

I honestly wish that I didn't feel this way. The pay is pretty good, and I specialize in older tools and languages that the younger crowd doesn't want to build with, so I should have plenty of work up to the point of retirement. But every project since 2020 that I've been on has been understaffed, so the sense of additional pressure is always there.

Today was ok. Usual unorganized chaos.

Yesterday was better. Drove there and found the gate locked meaning I had forgotten that yesterday was off.🤦‍♂️
