In researching a small trainwreck to build (no pun intended) I stumbled upon the AX84 4-4-0 studio but noticed it uses a 6SN7 as the power tube. Question: can the output tube be reworked in favor of another 12AX7/12BH7 tube similar to how @robrob does in a number of his micro versions of full size circuits? Nothing against 6SN7 tubes, I just have more 12A_7 tubes than the other. The schematic is on page 3 of the attached PDF.

The 6SN7 is an octal 12AU7, or going to 9-pin tunes they squeezed the 6SN7 in the smaller bottle. You could use one or a 12BH7 also. A 12AX7 is a higher gain rather than a higher current tube (relatively speaking) and would not have the power to push out much sound.

The original AX84 guys got the whole 12AU7 output boat rolling. Even Marshall noticed and did there one watt amps with a nod to the AX84 guys. Personally I like a real pentode output tube like the 6AK6 but the 12AU7 makes more sens as it still is in production.

Should I just copy and paste the micro bassman output section to achieve what I am going for? Is it as plug and play as that? I imagine basically where the schematic pre ends, I can plug it into the the bassman p/s and would be good to go?

Just building blocks, there are times when they do not like to play together but generally they will. You should be fine.
