Thanks for sharing the article, I'm a nightly dark chocolate eater albeit in small amounts ... helpful to see the 'safer'-testing brands and %'s for choosing.

"A Snickers bar isn't that bad!" 😍

/ <--- link to that audacious (and wealthy) longevity M.D.'s page, Blueprint something-or-other. Scroll about halfway down the long page and you'll find this:

WHAT IS HEALTHY CHOCOLATE?

  • LEVEL 1: Chocolate is good for you. A snickers bar isn’t that bad!
  • LEVEL 2: Any brand advertising “dark chocolate”
  • LEVEL 3: Un-dutched dark chocolate
  • LEVEL 4: Un-dutched dark chocolate, tested for heavy metals
  • LEVEL 5: Un-dutched dark chocolate, tested for heavy metals and from specific regions of the world with the highest polyphenol density

Didn’t read because consumer reports hasn’t been relevant in over 30 years due to questionable marketing practices.
But wouldn’t the primary factor be the location of the groves?

More like Cad-Me-Yum! Am I right?

Coming from the generation that ate lead paint from rent houses window sills I am okay with how long I've made it.

Everything is bad for you. Even things that are good for you, are bad for you.
Grow your own food and knit your own guitars. Don't drink the water and try not to breathe too much.

I've been listening to my bar of E. Wedel, dark Classic 64% dark chocolate and I can't hear any heavy metal yet.
It does say on the label - 'May contain nuts, milk, cereal, egg & nuclear waste'.

Just had a blood workup . My Doctor says there is not enough lead in your diet and you are low on chemicals found in fast foods. He also said you don't have to ware a blank on your face. And keep on jammin bamboo shoots under your finger nails and stop being a whoose. Well, it is time to walk on hot coals and go call some bikers at the local bar a sissy, right to their face. But first I am going to do something terribly wrong so my wife yells at me. It is a rough day.

I only eat milk chocolate now. As a child, when we lived down the street from the paint factory and across the road from the boot factory and just up from the lead mines and down the road from the brewery the air was pretty saturated. Dark chocolate was required just so the taste was strong enough for you to know what you had in your mouth. Plus, because it was harder and less sticky than milk chocolate, when you dropped a piece on the ground you could brush the dirt off a lot easier.

You should be writing ad copy for dark chocolate!

Lead and cadmium in chocolate (especially dark chocolate) isn't exactly news. It's been known about for years. Cadmium gets absorbed from the soil they're grown in. The lead seems to come from contamination on the ground and covers used for drying the beans. The obvious solution would be to grow the beans in better soil, and process them in a cleaner environment, but don't count on it. I gave up eating dark chocolate years ago, and I eat very little milk chocolate.

At least you can’t taste the lead and cadmium. I’m more concerned about perfectly good dark chocolate being intentionally adulterated with chilies and cherries and other fruits and vegetables.
