AVRI FSR 72 Thinline Reissue Production Dates and Numbers

Hi all, I'm new here - I have read the forums for a while but this is my first actual post after joining up.

I am in the process of buying a American Vintage FSR 72 Reissue Thinline Telecaster - I have done some reading on here about the pickups not being genuine, true-to-original, etc. but that aside - it seems to be a great instrument and good addition to my collection (I also have have a Baja tele).

There seems to be some conflicting info about these guitars, so I wanted to see if anyone could shed some light - I read in a few places that these were limited production #s, etc.

The one I am picking up is used from GC, it's being setup and I don't have the serial number so I can't figure out the year.

From reading online, it looks like they made this in 2005 and 2011-2013. Can anyone shed some light on the production years and #s?

What color is it? If it's the Black or Sunburst nitro finish with 9-1/2 inch neck & med jumbo frets as far as I've been able to tell they all have the revoiced pickups. Have you played it? If it's dark sounding it has the original reissue pickups if it sounds bright it's got the new ones.. really there is that much of a difference between the revoked reissues and the original reissues that it shouldn't be a mystery.

It's black with the 9.5" radius I checked the neck date and it's a 2012. It definitely has the revoiced pickups from playing it basically all night yesterday.

That's a great guitar.. I also have one in Candy Red with the vintage specs.. I went on a tear last year when Fender discontinued the AV series Thinlines.. For a while I was on the look out for another FSR in sunburst but I'm at full capacity for a while..

I don't know the numbers but there have been 2 versions of the US AVRI '72 Thinline - the original version with the 7.25" radius was introduced in 2011 and was discontinued in August 2012 when the current AV series was introduced. Right before the current AV series came out they hit with the FSR version that has the 9.5" radius; I think that one came out in either June or July of 2012 and was made at least through 2013. It's still on the Fender website which can mean it's either still in production or they still have a significant number left in the warehouse available to dealers.

As far as I know the nitro finish was only on the FSR models; the original AVRI models were both in poly (just as they were in 1969 and 1972). I'm not sure about the revamped pickups but that might also only have been on the FSRs; the "regular" AVRI models ('72 Thinline, '72 Deluxe, and '72 Custom) may not have gotten the new pickups as that happened right about when they were discontinued.

I think these AVRIs of the CBS-era models got a "soft" discontinuation - Fender kept taking orders until August 2012 so new ones were still rolling out for until early 2013 while the old '62 Custom Tele and previous '52 Tele got a "hard" discontinuation - they built out all the parts they had left, and once those (plus any left in the warehouse) were gone those two models were done.

That's interesting as the original 1972s were definitely poly by that point in time. I'll admit that I always assumed the AVRI '69 and all the AVRI '72 models were poly since the AVRI '70s Strat that came out several years earlier had a poly finish.

I stand corrected; I only recall picking up one AVRI '69 Thinline and it felt like poly but perhaps the neck just wasn't as sticky as new AVRI '52s or '62s (or the '57/'62 Strats) typically feel like when new.

I think the MIM models were poly..my neck definitely has a nitro coat, it has that familiar stickiness like all my other new nitro coated Fenders came with. Easily fixed though.

I'll say again that I love this guitar, maybe my favorite neck of any of my Teles. Not nuts about the F tuners though, may replace them with the Gotoh vintage set.
