Here are mine. One is a 2008 and one is 2013. Both are fantastic guitars. both are right about 7lb 1 oz. perfect.

The neck on the 2013 is slightly thicker. But thankfully it has a slight hint of V which makes it seem less bulky.

Maybe there are “tells” that would help you distinguish visually which is which? I know which obviously, but wouldn’t be able to tell by pics alone unless I already knew.

From what moosie taught me in the thread the 2013 is on the right. This thread was super

The grain / finish is the giveaway. Less orange, more opaque on the AV (2013). Bigger neck, too.

The AV finish is a true thin nitro, and the AVRI is nitro over top of something. It's thicker, and is more plasticky. Meaning, if you poke around the edges of a pocket, on your '08 you can probably get a razor blade between body and finish. The finish is like a separate 'candy coating'. It's not just the AVRIs, I've had CS from that period that was similar - even Wildwoods...

I'm not trying to imply that you need to care, but that's what I'd look at to identify.

    Now you would say:

AV: 2013-2018 (when the American Original replaced the AV)

Yeah, I waffled because I wasn't sure exactly when they discontinued. Was there a full 2018 season?

And since I was speaking of AVs, one form or another, AO didn't come into it... (because for me, they aren't in any way comparable).

I like both! The grain on the older model, and the thin finish sinking into the grain on the newer. I don't buy the sounds-better-because-it-can-breathe bit, but it sure does look cool to me.

Here are my two (2005, 2016), both results of my starting this thread. I better stop starting threads...

And here's the 58 with them... which has both visible grain, and sinking finish. Back in 2013, it was the Telecaster that converted me...

Leo was way ahead of his time. He was actually able to design the curve of the body so it was complementary with human brain waves. Look at one long enough, and it spells out "Teles RULE". Les Paul saw it, that's why he told McCarty that if Gibson didn't "do something", Leo Fender was going to rule the world.

OK, I could have some of that wrong... :D
