My wife are finally going to Austin in late October. I've found MANY recommendations for music venues to go to from a search of these forums.
Can any locals recommend the best areas to hotel in that are close to many sites, bars, etc. We are trying to do without a rental car while there.
    Thanks in advance.

The Driskill would be a great choice.
It's not cheap, but it is cool, historic and right in the middle of the downtown (6th St.) entertainment district.
It also has a great bar and live music.
The Austin Motel is also cool, it is located in the heart of the SoCo (South Congress Ave.) entertainment district.
It's near the Continental Club, Guero's, and other great restaurant/venues.
    It's (much) cheaper.
There are tons of other options, but I'd recommend those two.

I once crashed in a backyard on E 3rd street after a wedding reception!

I have stayed at the Extended Stays and it was alright. We also stayed at the Radisson for a wedding once it was nice, but closer to the river.

I guess I would go with the local advice and try the Driskill. I have always heard great things, but never had the chance to stay there.

Austin Motel was a great base for my musical vacation a few years ago.

You might also check with the airport hotels, they have a shuttle that makes the rounds to downtown I believe.

I had not thought of that. Hotels in the downtown area are $$$$, but if by the airport is less pricey AND has a shuttle to get me downtown for free, that might be a great option. Thanks.

We were going to try to Uber most places as it may be cheaper than renting. Or just renting for 2 or 3 of our six days there for day trips. Thanks!

Maybe get a rental and stay in a hotel in a nearby city, that would probably cover the cost of the rent car with the savings. It would tremendously open up your availability to see other things...

If it were me, I'd fly into Killeen, get a rent ca there (military town, better rates), drive to Salado and stay at the Stagecoach Inn (beautiful place). The you could drive to the different venues as well as a few other nearby communities with great attractions. Check the prices...

Another vote for the Extended Stay America.

    507 S 1st St, Austin, TX 78704

About half way between Sixth street to the North and the Continental club to the South, with lots of great walking in between (if you don't mind walking several miles in a day).

    Have fun....

Uber and Lyft are good options for getting around the central part of town; drivers may be more scarce the further out you get. Avoid the motels along the interstate in the north and south Austin; many are notorious for criminal activity. The holiday inn by interstate 35 right by the river is in a good location and not as expensive as the Driskill and Austin Motel. There are a bunch of hotels in the downtown area that are centrally enough located; just do a Google search for downtown Austin hotels. Interstate 35 can be hairy traffic wise at night; Salado not be a good choice for that reason, and is a bit far away.

There are a couple of great stories about the haunting.
My friend George Palmer Macias wrote a great song about it, "Drunk At The Driskill".
It's on his album, Water On Tin.
I have played the Driskill a number of times with George, Audrey Malone, and Paula Russell.
It was haunted by lots of happy revelers, every time.

If you don't want to rent a car, stay downtown. When I lived there, the wife and I staycationed at the W and it was great. Between uber/lyft and pedicabs, you'll be able to get around and have a really fun time, enjoy!

Don't know how long you are going for but I have done Austin and the hill country the last 2 years for my bday in Feb.
I would love to stay at the Austin motel or the San Jose near the continental club but those places are 100 bucks plus a night more then say the best western. We rent a car anyway because we love to catch a picker circle or 2 in Luckenback, a couple shows at Gruene Hall, and cruise hill country... with Austin stays at both ends of the vacation.... matter of fact we are planning another Feb. vacation for 2018 because we love the endless supply of music.......(ps don't miss chicken **** bingo)
