TRUE story- from last year.

I responded to a request for a seasoned guitar player, of which I am. On the phone we were in synch, same age, same genres of music, same experiences, pretty much equal in all aspects. They offered me a gig before they even heard me, I wasn't shocked.

I went to one JAM ahead of the gig, we covered their set list which I pretty much knew, and we covered some tunes that I do and they knew them as well. Imagine that, a bunch of older guys knowing songs that go back decades and just playing them ! I gave them my expectations, less than an hr from home, 2 or 3 sets max, no late hours. The laughed and agreed to all of it. Money was barely discussed but it was a $100 minimum. They were gitty that I would play with them, they knew of me but didn't know me. By the way they were very good players. We covered Country, Rock, Blues some Motown etc...it was actually quite fun, kinda like we had all played together for a long time.

So a few days before the gig , the gig details conversation was erratic, no direct answers, the time was 2 sets , 3 sets maybe a tad longer. The distance was maybe an hr maybe a tad more. I couldn't get it nailed down, but I had committed. Turns out the gig was 2 hrs away and was 4 sets. I don't wanna say they lied, but they lied. That's on me, I trusted them. I fronted probably half the songs over the 4 sets and I'm not even a front singer.

Following the gig yeah I got paid $100, then we never spoke again. They didn't need a guitar player for the band , they needed a guitar player for ONE gig. Apparently the player they usually use would not do that gig and I don't blame him.

I recently noticed that they are looking for a guitar player again ! Not me though. Live long enough, learn some more ! :)

I’ve been playing with same band for over 12 years.

I remember not getting jobs and rightly so way back in the day.

Call them and find out, it’s that easy.
I don’t understand the consternation. You can call, text, email, message someone. But people would rather post something to a message board where nothing can get answered nor resolved.

I like the ones, “I just joined a new band. Do I need to learn the songs note for note?” Well how the hell should WE know??

Why would you even care ? One day ( if you’re lucky) you’ll be an old fart looking back at your life. Get things done. Your things, whatever they are. Music is art, and as an artist you burn brighter than others. I guess the reason those guys ghosted you is they trust(respect) the group and not the individual self. Weak fellows. It takes heart to do things right.

You might try a bit more patience but "that's life" if they don't respond. The key is to move on if it happens and be positive.
Ancient wisdom: Living well is the best revenge.
If they're this un-professional about this, do you really wanna get more involved?
Didn't think so.

Start your own Tom Petty band, and put up posters all around where that band plays.

“Tom Pretty band for hire! Better than the real thing! We play for half the price of other Tom Petty bands!”

and then post the set list they gave you as an example, and your phone number. ;)
... and you can call your new Petty tribute band "The Ghost of Tom Petty." 🥴
