If the chrome neck cover cuts treble response, does the ash tray bridge cover
have the same effect on the bridge pickup? Rarely see them in use but they
    look cool.

I really don't know I think it's time to check it out. I've always used the ashtray cover because the SG that I learned on had a cover over the bridge. I think it's time to do a couple the sound tests with or without the cover

I've never noticed a difference with or without the ashtray.

Greatest impact on sound by an ashtray cover might be the impossibility of palm muting.

I think fender put them on because the set screws on the bridge will cut into your hand on a tele with a fixed bridge and strats with a whammy bar the ashtray is a lot smaller.

I think Leo's original idea with that was three-fold: shielding, cover the bridge pickup for aesthetics as it was popular on lap steels, and probably as a hand rest given that he wanted a lap steel sound in a Spanish style guitar.

I've tried A-B'ing them several times and have never been able to make a clear distinction. On my more microphonic Teles I sometimes immediately hear a small difference and other times I'm not so sure. Don't notice any difference on some of my other Teles.

I can only assume at this point that there's either a minor difference that isn't noticeable enough that I could tell right away if somebody swapped it on me after a few minutes (sort of like some tubes that I can hear a difference in right away but not after becoming accustomed to the change) or it doesn't make a difference.

It wouldn't, because it's opposite the pickup.
