Same here. My friend and I were riding horseback on Duke, when he burst into a gallop and veered to the right. Then a sharp cut to the left and my friend and I went flying. We were 18, so nothing bothered us.

I've been on a horse just once. I was seven. The horse just stood there, but I fell off.

    Nuts to that.

My undergraduate experience in the early 1970s remains on my mind to this day.

I was never really happy until after I graduated college, when I joined the Aerospace Workers and Machinists union and became an unskilled laborer in a large welding shop, manufacturing boat trailers. Coming home at night, burns from the hot metal on my forearms, new muscles bulging, I felt that I was a man among men. College did not provide this type of reality, one I had needed.

    Thanks, professors, for listening.
