I got an e-mail from UPS that they have a label that has separated from its package and that they will have to contact the sender to determine which unlabeled box it goes on.
So I have a new guitar sitting in a UPS depot in an unlabeled box.
What are the chances things will have a happy resolution?

I would think it easy to resolve. I believe there is a smaller barcode tag somewhere on the carton that corresponds to the shipment/shipping invoice. I just threw out a UPS delivered carton last night or I'd doublecheck my theory.

    That's correct.

Before the bar codes, you had to affix labels to two sides of the box. Now, that the barcodes are in place, one label is thought to suffice.

Well, if you consider a full refund a happy resolution.

Turns out I had two guitar shipment boxes in my utility room (no cases, so I kept them). One is UPS, the other FedEx. The UPS has the previously mentioned small sticker identifying me and the shipping number, the regular label with shipping info and number, and a sticker identifying the shipper. The Fedex had two stickers on it that I saw. I think you are in good shape.

Surely the box will be the one without a label?

Next, the box arrives but no case is inside the box.

Then, the case is found but the guitar is not in the case.

Wait. I had that dream, last night. When I finally tracked the guitar down, it had huge, weird fretboard inlays that were sunk in 1/4ths inches. And the headstock was Danelectro but sort of cocked off to the side. Baritone scale, sort of "D" shaped but recessed along the keel. About as unplayable as a fever dream can produce.
