Arp 2600 Arrived!

I missed out on the ARP 2600FS pre-order a few years ago by just a few hours. All orders were filled. I found this posted earlier this week. Perhaps a returned item. Was listed as B stock at a discount price! I wonder what my life would be like if I got into this 40-50 years ago.

Without the keys it looks like a prop from Red Dwarf.

What do you plan to do with it? And isn’t there software that does the same?

!! I am having so much fun! Downloaded a Patch Book. I'm already having thoughts on how to modify the book patches.I can't imagine how they patched without an Internet back then!

I had a great experience cutting my teeth on a 2600. The original owner's manual is an excellent primer on synthesis.

I wouldn't have a clue if I did experiment with VCV Rack software for a couple of years. Hit the pause button when i decided to learn guitar some 5 years ago.

Thanks. I learned Synth stuff back in the 80's when I got my 1st synth. A Yamaha DX 27. I had fun "menu diving" to edit patches. Tho with Euro-Rack, they speak a language I don't quite understand. Yet!
My fav's are Colin Bender and Alex Robotnick.

I am not intimidated by this. If I heard something I wanted to change, I would know exactly what knob/switch/cord to use!

We used little mini jack jumper cords.

When I was a kid, a lot of the farmland around us was sold off to make housing developments. One of the families that moved in when I was in high school was a guy that moved from California to be the advertising/promotional director... basically like a band's agent for Allen. He had a 2600 sitting on his living room table for a month before the introduction, and he encouraged me to come up every day after school and mess around with it. I got hooked, but even with the discount he offered, we couldn't afford it.

A decade or so later, our HS band's bass player went to work for ARP and developed the hex pickup for their guitar synthesizer. I think Townshend bought one, but it pretty much sunk the company.

Tho with Euro-Rack, they speak a language I don't quite understand. Yet!

Eurorack isn't anything special or mysterious. It's a standard physical and electrical format for powering the modules you plug into it. The modules themelves aren't any different than the sections of your ARP; they draw power from the rack and have inputs and outputs on the front panel that are connected with patch cords. The 10-pin version of the Eurorack connector has lines for broadcast of a gate (key pressed) signal and control voltage (for key pitch), which are two of the things the ARP keyboards sent into the unit and could be patched around to various points.

Synths haven't been my thing for a long time, but I wouldn't be shocked to learn that there were enough 2600-equivalent modules on the market to assemble a working 2600 in Eurorack format.

this is an older picture of my build at present . it has grown exponentially since

it has 2 behringer model D's , neutron , pro 1, Barp 2600, crave, a eurorack with 2 more 2600 oscilators, 2 moog sequencers , Zaquencer, 2 korg SQ10's, korg SQ64, Arp 2500 sequencers, 4 arturia keyboards ,an oscilloscope, korg M50, Kurzweil K2000, 2 Korg Kaospros ,not in this picture Korg trident extreme 88 key, and a NI komplete Kontrol S88 midi controller and much more in the euro-rack, in a side rack I have 2 Roland sound modules, a D110, and a JV880, alesis data disc, and alesis DM5 electronic drum head plus a 2 in 10 out midi switcher .
all I need to do now is hook up my effects and we are in full operation.

if you had one 50 years ago? it would be in need if total repair by now , these units are much more stable today

euro-rack runs on +5, -5, 0 volts giving a 10 volt spread. most oscillators use a 1 volt per octave range, no magic there at all. This is the same for the 2600, the exception is the external instrument input on the 2600 which you can use the Voltage processor to adjust to the 2600's limits . wait till you get a sequencer !!!!! its like putting fins on your rocket!

as long as this thing does not ask me to feed it , I can play what ever I want , it does sound spectacular though,
This will be tied to the daw Via midi that has about 200 virtual synths that can also be controlled through midi

I found 1!! Step Brother its called I sent an email asking if it works with Korg. I just may sent back the Korg 2600 M and buy theirs! Going to cost way more than I paid for mine. And it's full size. (edit) Company called Antonus, in Spain. Taking pre-orders.

think he was referring to me playing telephone exchange operator on my system, LOL
here is a close up of my system , BTW any sequencer will work as long as it is 1 volt per octave will work with your system, even the Korg SQ10 ( about125.00 USD) you can see 2 of them above te 2600 in my picture, as soon as I hook up my effects to the mixer I use there I will take and post some new pictures
