Was watching the Dylan Rolling Thunder film a few weeks back . . . suddenly out of nowhere, there's a young thin Arlen Roth playing country licks. Unless my memory's playing tricks, it was behind Patti Smith doing some sort of weird proto-rap 'performance art'. Talk about the Odd Couple. . . .

(Yes, I have the book. Good stuff.)

I'm thinking about cutting off the glue binding and replacing it with a comb binding.

Amazon, eBay, you should be able to find a copy.
It's my favorite instructional book by far.

I tried Amazon a few times but could only find the Dvd which I purchased,
I've never bought anything from eBay but I guess I might take the plunge, thanks.

Man some real monster players on that record. Years ago I had a vhs instructional video from Arlen , learned a few tricks but man what a great player.

Yes, amazing! Arlen actually backed up everyone that night, the first "surprise" night of the Rolling Thunder thing! Jack Elliot, Dylan, Phil Ochs, Ginsberg, McGuinn......many!

Thanks for the confirm. I guess I'm going to have to go back and check out some Arlen in slow time.

I had one of Arlen’s courses on cassette ( something like basic blues) and if I pick up a guitar that’s basically what I play. If I was to be objective about it I’m pretty certain I’d have to say Mr Roth is the single biggest influence on my playing.
Perhaps I should track down Masters and learn a new lick or two, it’s certainly over due...

And I should go hunt down some of his old lessons, and fish that book out of storage. Regrettably, he seems to have retired from the long-form teaching gig after his family tragedy.

FYI, more lessons from Arlen Roth at gibson.com

Great book. That's the one that made me buy a tele. I started the exercises on a strat, finished them on my brand new 97 Am St Tele. Sill my main player.
