“Deranged” comes from the old French word déranger, which roughly means doing the opposite of putting in line or order. I like order and routine, am detail oriented, and take great care that my life is structured and methodical. I do not enjoy being out of control, largely due to an upbringing in which chaos had free reign of jagged pasture. Ironically, disorder was the hot brand that allowed me to mine a mother lode of creativity, yet it took me years to corral the mare of normalcy that had eluded me for three fourths of my life. For decades, I raked screams of mind across the glass and bristled as the flames of cruel inevitability swarmed the barn.
