Just learned about this supposed Law that states that in any working environment the square root of the total employees do half of all work in that organization...seems about right...

A 10 person operation has about 3 “over achievers”
    100 people have 10...etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case.

    Price’s law?

I thought that meant that if everyone else overbid you only bid $1.

The general rule is 10% of the workforce does 90% of all the work in any organization.

I wonder if the square root of the TDPRI membership do half the posting?

The key is that the 'law' is just a construct. It is, in no way, a constant nor a guarantee and I'd argue it is 'reactive' which is to say, if management is only noticing this rather than designing to get a different performance model, then it will be extant.

People who just 'have jobs' and kind of look at how 'screwed up' it is... well, they will fall into this.

But, in great organizations, there will be a LOT more balance and contributions will come from more people in greater measure... and this can be done in a way that is both humane and grows workers and consistently improves the vision of the organization by not being observational but driving the result.

If it was true at my workplace, I'd get out or change it (and have...) At places like Cisco Systems, they simply wash the bottom 20% performers every year. Not thoughtful, assumes unlimited resources and it is very wasteful... but, it is a direct attack on things like 'price's law'....

I've managed a group that was the top performing group at a large company and I can guarantee you that it was not the result of the efforts of the square root of the group... OMG. it was an all star team that worked like the last few years of the Golden State Warriors (a great place to see how Price's Law is not the rule for all orgs)

Price, like Murphy, is an optimist.
