Here's what I'm thinking: If I wanted to mount the neck pickup to the body and not have screwheads showing on the pickguard that I'm not going to have, the screws would have to clear the mounting holes on the pickup. So as to not ruin the threads on the mounting holes, the screws would have to be smaller than the screws that thread into the pickup to mount the pickup onto the pickguard that I'm not going to have.

So either body-mount screws are smaller than pickguard-mount screws, or I'd kinda have to trash the holes in the pickup to make them clear the screws to body mount them. Right?

I trashed the holes on my last project. it worked well, I haven't looked at them since. You could take the pickup to a local hardware store and find the screws you need, although they may be kinda thin.
I suspect most people booger the holes.

P90 mounting screws will work great. You can cut them to the length you need for direct mounting the pickup and grind or file a point on the cut end.

I know you know this--but for builders new to this stuff: pre-drill the holes for the screws. And don't drill all the way through the body out the back...you will hate yourself.

It's like drilling for neck screws; you don't want an extra position marker.

Actually I considered coming in through the back with the pickguard-sized screws and using the threads in the pickup, like Danelectro did. It would give way more adjustment range. Direct mounting has rather little range between popping through the back and dropping out on top.

Machine screw standard for Tele bridge and neck are 3/4" 6-32, Tele neck wood body screws are #4 x 1" and will not disturb any machine screw mounting hole threads in the Tele neck bottom flatware.
