We appraise guitars where I work, for insurance purposes.
We charge a flat $25 fee.
Most of the time we use the Vintage Guitar Magazine buyer's guide as a reference.
We show the customer the value in the book.
We have other books to determine the age of older guitars.
It usually works fine.
The shop has been around for 25 years.
I, personally have been a guitar lover for 43 years, so I have experienced a lot of changes.
I have been doing music retail/pawnbroker/gigging since 75'.
We buy and consign guitars too, obviously.
We buy at 50% of what we sell a used instrument for.
We charge a 20% fee for consignment over $1500, 25% under.
We decline a lot of entry level/shredder guitars.
Floyds and pointy 80's style guitars just hang around forever in Austin.
We also do a lot of repairs/set ups.
I do the store stock set ups.
We have 3 great professional luthiers too.
We try to be consistent.
We have a low "flame" rate in the rating polls.
Hard to keep everyone happy, though.
