Was listening to some FM top-40 in my car

Rihanna & stuff like that. THe beat was being kept with (maybe) synth "pulses" & claps. Two or three songs rolled & they were kind of the same: No drums.

Are we witnessing the vanishing of Drums from commercial music?

Uh, no. I am sure in a year it will be sixteenth bass drum beats or something like that.

I mean, come on. Barbershop quartet was HUUUUUGE 100 years ago, I guess rag time is on the way out, right?

Also they were are probably capitalizing on this song:

Which isn't too bad, actually. But I think you really need to turn off the top 40 music. You live in Beirut, there has to be a HUUUGE selection music in that area.

I don't think so. It really depends on the type of music. I posted about Roland TR-808 beats a while back. A friend of mine likes these, and Hip Hop depends heavily on electronic beats. However, if you are making music in general, drums or percussion are usually part of the equation. IMO, electronic beats are mainly for dance music. A human drummer is going to be far more flexible and versatile than a generated beat.

I've heard this plugged a lot recently on the radio, so I'll just leave it here.

You have to consider which way mainstream pop is going.

Sure, but people who grew up with one decade of music will always say the current generation of music is not as good.

I stream ripped about a thousand songs from 181 FM's Good Time Oldies, and let me tell you, a lot of that music is really BAD.

Not just drums. I saw a "band" on one of the late night shows this week that consisted of two keyboard players (one with a laptop), a lead singer and two backup singers. No drums, no bass, no guitars. No fun. CS

Of course I like drums as much as guitar, bass, etc...& yeah.. not ALL drums were good BUT I sure gonna miss them

Of course not, like with guitar companies the drum companies are selling more drums than they ever did in their entire history,so SOMEBODY must be buying and playing them.

Commercial music is not only hip hop , r&b & electronic but consists of many kinds of music and most of them do require drummers.

In fact music that DOES require a DRUMMER playing REAL drums (country, jazz, alternative, christian rock & rock) OUTSELLS r&b and hip hop music by a long margin and come to think about it some of the best drummers in the world DO play hip hop and r&b music (google "gospel drummers")

It's possible to operate a musical outfit with previously key positions being filled using electronics. This can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on individual perspective.
