I'm bored to death with music today. With the exception of about a handfull of bands, I listen to music that was made 10, 20, 30 years before I was born. I'm just waiting for a savior to come and take the music scene by storm. In my opinion, REAL rock and roll is a dead genre.

That being said, I just checked these guys out for the first time and...OH MY GOD, COULD THEY BE ANYMORE BORING. Whoever said that thing about no chord changes, YOU ARE RIGHT.

About as exciting as...well, no...this is the most bored I've ever been.

Well, I think it's too bad you feel that way, but everyone has their tastes in music. I on the other had think there is so much better music out there today than at any other time in history and you can thank the Internet for that. Sure, there's a lot of bad stuff but there always was. Some of of the stuff I hear right there at the Twanger Forum is really good music. I feel for you if you can't find ANYTHING out there you like that's new. I don't think you're looking hard enough. I can't recommend anything because from you post you'd put down anything I would offer, thus I think you need to find it yourself.
When push comes to shove I suppose we all like just a handfull of bands, but that doesn't mean everything else is boring or sucks. Open your mind and ears. It's out there for the taking.

I apologize for not liking most modern music. But like you said, we all have our own tastes. I never said that I can't find anything. I listen to a lot of music. I guess I should have been more specific by saying "I don't like most popular, modern music on the radio this day in age." I never said that it sucked. I said I was bored with it. To be completly honest with you, I don't really like you putting words into my mouth .And what exactly do you mean by this?

I can't recommend anything because from you post you'd put down anything I would offer

Just so that I'm crystal clear on what you're trying to say.

Please respond soon.

And multi-instrumentalists just for the sake of it, doesn't impress me.

Amen again David!

I'm not trying to knock anyone's respect for the band. Everyone is allowed to enjoy what they enjoy. It just seems to me that if they're all about committment, then they should commit to a role in the band. Not just say, "hey, can we trade insturments for a couple songs?"

If they want to be true multi-insturmentalists, then they should pick up insturments that they don't just trade off. It's like punk rock bands playing the accordian and mandolin. Joe Strummer's (link removed) were champions of it, bringing strings, horns, organ, and percussion into the mix - all very tastefully.

Far be it from me to tell musicians not to break the rules. I do not want to contribute to the stagnant musical climate that exists on the airwaves, but I don't think insturment rotation is likely to really crack open the safe where all the good music is kept.

LOL, no problem...Jimi Hendrix never did it for me either. To me, he's the musical equivalent of Tylenol Simply Sleep. We all have our preferences.

Just as an aside Ben, when I saw them live, they were not just trading off standard instruments. They were whipping out all kinds of strange and funky stringed stuff and percussion. The only time I saw more instruments was on Sprinsteen's Devils and Dust tour. The instrument selection was pretty eclectic.

T-bone Tone;745314]They are the darlings of the Kensington champagne socialist sect. These sweet, middle-class-never-had-a-hard-day-in-their-life boys play with an exquisite unwarranted sense of their own accomplishment.

T-bone, your comment wins my "best gutting of a band in 40 words, or less, contest".

The left wing biased BBC, naturally loves them; they were recently featured on BBC2's news flagship 'Newsnight', arts review panel, where the more pretentious of the panel - always in the majority on this show - waxed lyrical nonsense. The few dissenting voices of common sense were lost. Where is England's version of Peter Griffin? We need you now!

Is this an example of this British class envy thing I'm always hearing about?

It sure makes the two bands I linked to better. If a band just sucks at everything, of course, it'll just make it all the more painful to listen to.

I'm glad to hear that Arcade Fire does indeed embrace additional insturments, but I do stick by my assessment of their sound.

This is, however, only my opinion, and not sharing it does not decrease my respect for anyone. They're not thaaaaat bad. :D

I think it's great that The Arcade Fire has elicited such responses! Personally, I'm an indie rock dude so I'm partial to that "sound". If you like them you might want to check out The Walkmen (less ambient but a similar aesthetic).

All I meant was that multi-instrumentalism is a means to an end, not an end unto itself. I don't think that in and of itself, it can make the difference between a good band and a great one, but if a different instrumental texture serves the song, then by all means use it.

Dude, if more people were as considerate of other people's opinions as you are, the world would indeed be a better place.
