I'm not bored with pedals; I love them, and they're integral to my playing. But whereas I used to almost religiously watch TPS, The JHS Show, and a few YouTube pedal demo channels, eagerly await pedal news on the guitar-based podcasts I listen to, and spend time a few times a week scouring Reverb, over the past year (and especially in 2023), I find I meet most pedal-release news with a shrug and only give passing consideration to buying a new pedal. My board stands as follows:

Tuner -> EQD Park Sound Fuzz -> Wampler Pantheon -> Wampler Tumnus -> JHS PackRat -> Boss Dimension C-Wazacraft, Boss RE-2, Keeley Omniverb. The only two I've ever given any thought to swapping out are the Park Sound Fuzz (for a Muff-style fuzz with mids control) and the RE-2 (for the DD-200), but that would be more to try another flavor for the heck of it than the notion I was somehow upgrading my board.

I go through stages.

First I bought a lot of pedals .. A LOT.

Then I bought a bunch of guitars.

Now I'm buying guitar parts to modify those guitars.

Next I'll move to get a few more tube amps just exclusively for church.

However, no, I've never had the opposite of GAS. Opposite of GAS would be "Sell All Syndrome" wouldn't it? I might just stop buying one day altogether but that is hard to see coming.

Yes, I've gone past the GAS stage for all the gear (guitars, amps and pedals). Mainly as I find that I gig with one main guitar, a small pedalboard and one amp (Fender '64 Custom deluxe). The pedals I thought were hugely different don't really sound that different in a band context, so I striped the board down to a simpler set up. Kind of lost interest after that, so will set some aside to sell. Already sold one amp and have another advertised, a smaller one to put up soon too.

I guess I got to the point where I realised I had more than enough gear and it wasn't making me a better player, or 'inspiring' me to play once the initial honeymoon period was over. Practising more does though and I've been playing a lot more gigs and some solo stuff in the last year. I think that's improved my playing more than buying more gear.

Also I retired early last year, so I'm less able to make purchases on a whim; I have to think it through a lot more to justify and now it rarely results in buying something after the 'thrill' of the research phase.

I often wonder how much better I'd be if I'd just stuck with a couple of guitars, one amp and a few pedals rather than getting distracted (mainly by forums like this if I'm honest ;) ) and buying more gear I didn't really need, but could afford (at the time).

After nailing down the direction of my rig, I pretty much been GAS-free for pedals and amps.

I do a hybrid of tube preamp and digital power amp and speaker IR sims direct to PA and I have the best of both worlds. I also dont do overdrive pedals anymore since I got the right preamp for the gain tones which makes my sound free of stacking overdrive pedals which kills dynamics - anyway - this rig is working great.

I only have 1 guitar at the moment and it’s a CS. And because i want the next guitar to be the same quality/level, I cant just buy anything. I just try to keep my spending geared towards high quality stuff so no impulse buys and that means GAS is at bay.

I've been feeling this about my material possessions in general, of late. I live in a small house, and I've just got too much detritus in my life. I don't have loads of guitars, but I have three amps and a few dozen pedals. If we go beyond guitar stuff, I seem to have a lot of books. Plus an embarrassing amount of CD's.

I'm feeling the need to minimalise.

I have every thing I need there is not one single piece of gear that I require , some one asked me yesterday if I was interested in a mixer ,
I told them I have a studio master 16X4X2X4 , a teac 24X8X4X2, in storage 2 Mackie 1604 VLZ, mackie FX16 for sub mixes , I came across a Miedas 32X8X4X2 for 450.00 cdn I could not justify it. and that is just mixers ,3 reel to reels , DAT recorders , digital hard drive recorder, digital data recorders for midi gear
I will be having a massive sale of my excess gear this summer , what do I need 2X 4X12 cabs 1 peavey /1 fender , a 2X15 cab cerwin vega, acoustic 6x12 cab a pair of 4560's and peavey horns and I have not even started ( it gives me a headache thinking of this.)

Cured of GAS, and I used to have it bad... but, I don't play anywhere but home these days, with the exception of an occasional road trip.

I've been in a gear purge phase lately. In the past few months, I've parted with four amps, four guitars, and several smaller items, like speakers, pedals, tubes, guitar parts...In the last year, I have sold off probably twice as much gear.

As of yesterday, I'm down to one '50s Telecaster, and a '68 Custom Vibro Champ Reverb. I'm happy with the simplicity. The only 'pedal' I now own is the two-button foot switch for the tremolo and reverb. There's enough classic Fender tone on tap with this setup to keep me going.

I am, however, on the lookout for a small, all solid wood parlor guitar. A single 0, or 00 sized, and then I will be done. I want to spend more time playing and less time shopping and/or restoring and modding gear.

After 60+ years of playing, I have, at one time or another, owned every amp I ever wanted. A couple years or so ago I began selling off the "excess", and keeping only the amps that I actually need and will use in any given situation and/or venue. I'm down to nine amps now and very pleased with my selection of what to keep. I have no seller's remorse whatsoever. I too, am happiest with just the two-button Reverb-Tremolo (Vibrato) footswitch, but will occasionally utilize a delay pedal when needed. While nine amps might seem like allot to some people, these are merely the tools of this trade....nothing more.

I got pedal GAS during lock down. Amazon was great, buy it, try it, send it back! I got through dozens of 'em, some I couldn't understand why people raved about them. I got to know what I liked and now I'm all out of pedal GAS.

Also in lock down I got minor GAS building tele partscasters and swapping pickups around. Then I put 490s on my Epi SG, which led me to buy an LPJ with a P90. And with my old Strat I have a variety of major pickup types and no more pickup GAS.

I have an old Fender Frontman, but last year I bought a Pro Junior, I'd forgotten how good valve amps were! I upgraded the speaker and put in a silly bid on a Blues Junior that I didn't need. Now I have 3 amps, well 4 if you count the Pignose and then there's a couple of headphone amps. And I've just seen a classic Epiphone Valve Junior. It's all starting again!

That would be an opposite. Another opposite of pedal GAS would be gas PEDAL:

I haven't made a change to my pedalboard in several years. In fact, I have a half dozen or so that I never use and need to put on Reverb.

I haven't bought a guitar in a couple of years either. I have a couple of repair/resurrection projects active, but no real interest in buying more guitars, though I still enjoy shopping. In fact, I would thin the herd if it weren't for sentimental value.

I'm very, very happy with the Quilter Mach 3 amp I bought a couple of years ago. It does everything I could ask of it, so I have zero interest in new amps.

Guess I finally ran out of GAS!

I think it is the same for other hobbies as well, especially device-centered ones.

I used to be super into knives and multi-tools and flashlights. Now I have ones that meet my needs and preferences and that is good enough.

Every few years I might look at what is new out there, but usually I find I am content with what I have.
